Vision Center
The Vision Center (in partnership with the University of California, Berkeley University Eye Center) offers a yearly comprehensive eye examination to diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of vision problems. Services include an assessment of the visual refractive system, a glaucoma test, slit lamp biomicroscopy, and a dilated retinal exam for the detection of ocular diseases. Our eye examination can also detect ocular manifestations of systemic diseases, such as those related to diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune disorders.
Periodic eye examinations are an important part of routine preventive health care. Many ocular conditions present no obvious symptoms; therefore, individuals are often unaware that a problem exists. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for maintaining good vision and when possible, for preventing permanent vision loss.
Eye examinations are provided by the faculty and senior interns of the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry, Meredith W. Morgan University Eye Center. On completion of the eye exam, you may be given a prescription for eyeglasses. Prescriptions for glasses can be filled at our Optometry Clinic. We offer a wide selection of eyeglass and sunglass frames to choose from as well as special prescription lens features. These features include anti-reflective coatings, ultra thin lenses, polarized, and variable tint lenses. Sac State students are eligible for frames and lenses at a discounted rate. In addition, we offer contact lens fitting services and fill contact lens prescriptions at a discounted rate.
FAQ's
Who is eligible for services at the Vision Center?
All currently enrolled Sac State students are eligible for one comprehensive examination per year (contact lens fees for established patients $20.00, new contact lenses $30.00/includes training). Faculty and staff may also be seen at the Optometry Clinic (we will bill your VSP insurance for you). The cost of glasses/contact lenses is variable and dependent on your prescription.
How often should I get my eyes checked?
The need for and frequency of eye examinations vary with age, race, medical history, family history, occupation, and other factors. In general, healthy individuals should have a comprehensive eye examination every 1-2 years. However, the presence of certain risk factors may necessitate more frequent evaluations based on the judgement of your eye care provider. Anyone who experiences sudden vision changes or ocular discomfort should seek immediate evaluation by an eye care professional.

Do I need to bring anything with me to my appointment?
Wear your current contact lenses and bring your glasses. Contact lens wearers are requested to wear their lenses at least three hours prior to their appointment. In addition, contact lens wearers should bring their current contact lens parameter information in the form of a contact lens package or prescription.
NOTE: Bring sunglasses when having an initial eye exam.
How long is the appointment?
The initial appointment generally takes about 45 minutes. Follow-up appointments may be necessary for additional services such as contact lens fitting and/or evaluation. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to fill out the necessary medical forms and check in directly at the Optometry Clinic upstairs.
If I have vision insurance, can I use it?
There are two insurance plans accepted here for the purchase of glasses and contact lenses: Vision Service Plan (VSP) and Medical Eye Services (MES). We would be happy to check your insurance eligibility for these plans when you schedule your appointment.
