Hometown: Seaside, Calif.

Major: Graphic Design and Digital Multimedia. Class of 2006.

Background: One of nine children. Policy maker for non-profit organization Safe Teens Empowerment Project in Salinas while in high school, where he gave presentations to teens and city councils throughout California. Worked on Sacramento State’s signage project and the Julia Morgan House brochure. Director of communications for the Graphic Resources Information Design Society at Sacramento State. Helped start the student American Institute of Graphic Arts chapter.

Influences: “My family and myself—I have to impress and make my family happy and I push myself to make my family proud. Getting praise from my peers is also very valuable because at times I doubted myself. You go through the semester and you get overwhelmed with things but then you hear people say, ‘No you’ll do fine’ or a faculty member mentions you. It’s an awesome feeling to have people talking about you in a positive way.”

Highlight: “The graphic design program—when it got to the upper division classes—the amount of fun I had doing projects and the people I got to meet. The faculty helped me out quite a bit, making me realize I had the potential to actually go further than I thought I was capable of. The dorms would also be a highlight, the friends that I met there are friends I still have now.”

Proudest accomplishment: “Producing the Fall 2005-Spring 2006 Class Schedule cover was really enlightening and then being picked for the Spring Show where graphic designers, interior designers and photographers show off their work. Two of my works were picked for that. It’s nice to know that this work is paying off and I actually am kind of good at what I do and it’s a nice overall feeling that I’m accomplishing something.”

Destination: “I am an advertising designer at Sacramento Magazine right now and I was really fortunate to get that job. I would like to be creative director at a large firm that does everything from print and digital media to movie trailers. I would also really like to do transportation and industrial design.”
