BAZZANELLA LITERARY AWARDS

All students currently enrolled at CSU, Sacramento, during Spring 2009 are eligible to enter. Students can NOT be auditing courses. They must be enrolled as a full-time matriculated graduate or undergraduate student.

The competition will be separated between graduate and undergraduate students determined by their Spring class standing. Within their particular class standing, a student may enter more than one category but may submit only one entry in a particular category. Submitted manuscripts must be original work by the author and not have been published or have won a prize in a previous literary contest.

CATEGORIES
Poetry
Short Fiction
Critical Analysis
Expository Prose

The first place prize in each category will be $200.

The second place prize in each category will be $100.

First and second place winning entries in each category will be published.

Manuscripts should be typed, double spaced with 1" margins and must have a title on the top of the manuscript's first page. Do not include a separate title page. Pages must be stapled and numbered. The maximum number of words for the Short Fiction category is 6000 (approx. 20 pages typed doubled spaced) and 5000 words (approx. 16 pages typed double spaced) for the Critical Analysis and Expository Prose categories. Pages containing bibliography and footnotes do not count in calculating length. Manuscripts which exceed the maximum length will not be submitted to the judges. The category identified as "Critical Analysis" is restricted to essays which analyze a work of art such as novels, poetry, essays, film, music, or some other aesthetic medium. Essays not analyzing an art work should be submitted under the expository essay category. Students may submit only one poem in the Poetry category. The Coordinator reserves the right to change to a different category an entry which, in his opinion, has been submitted incorrectly.

You will also need to submit your entry on either flash drive or CD (Microsoft Word is the preferred software) using 12 pt Times New Roman font.

Manuscripts are due in the Writing Programs Office (CLV 111) by 12:00 Noon, Monday, April 13. Late entries will not be accepted.

(Over for more detailed information about submitting your manuscript)

Please read carefully: You will submit three things with each entry:

a manuscript,
an envelope (see below for information to include inside the envelope),
AND a flash drive or CD containing your entry.

Your manuscript should:

include the title at the top of the first page.
be stapled.
have the pages numbered.
be double spaced with 1” margins.
use Times New Roman 12 pt. font.

It should NOT have your name anywhere.

The outside of the envelope should state the following:

title of manuscript,
category (poetry, short fiction, critical analysis, or expository prose),
along with your graduate or undergraduate level.

Sealed inside the envelope you must include the flash drive or CD which contains your entry AND a separate sheet of paper with the following information:

your name,
address,
telephone number,
e-mail address,
social security number (MUST include this as it is the only way a check can be awarded)
your graduate or undergraduate level,
title of manuscript and category
AND the type of computer program you used.

Clip the envelope to the front of the manuscript.

Leave your entry with Aaron or Bev in CLV 111. CDs will be kept on file until September 30, 2009 and then discarded. There is a separate judge for each of the four categories. The judges are not members of the staff or faculty of CSU, Sacramento. The judges' decisions are final. Winners will be notified by phone the week of April 27. We will publish first and second place winning entries in a booklet. If you do not want your entry published, you should not enter it in this contest.

There will be an awards ceremony and reception for the winners and their guests on Tuesday, May 19, 6:30 p.m. in the University Center Restaurant, 1st floor of the University Union.

All questions regarding the contest must be addressed to
