Graduate Program Admission Requirements

Admissions to the Graduate Program is undergoing change campus wide.  Students are advised to check the Office of Graduate Studies page for updated information:  http://www.csus.edu/gradstudies/

For students with an undergraduate major in Kinesiology, admission to the MS program as a classified graduate student requires:

  • An overall GPA of 2.8, or 3.0 in the last 60 semester units; and
  • Undergraduate statistics course

The Kinesiology Graduate Program only has Fall Semester admissions into the program. For details regarding application deadlines, please see the Graduate Studies website for dates.

All prospective graduate students, including CSUS graduates, must file the following with the Office of Graduate Studies, River Front Center 215, (916) 278-6470:

  • an online application for admissions
  • two sets of official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, other than Sacramento State
  • letter of intent

All prospective graduate students, including CSUS graduates, must file the following with the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, Solano Hall 3002:

  • set of official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, including Sacramento State
  • three letters of recommendation
  • letter of intent
  • resume

Approximately six weeks after receipt of all items listed above, a decision regarding admission will be mailed to the applicant. Upon admission, the student will select a graduate advisor.

Students applying for admission to the Kinesiology graduate program who do not have a degree in Kinesiology are required to take a minimum of 20 specified units in Kinesiology. For a list of prerequisites to both concentrations see below.

Movement Studies Option: 18 units to include KINS 120, Specificity of Conditioning; KINS 134, History and Philosophy of Physical Education and Sport; KINS 137, Sociology of Sport; KINS 138, Teaching Strategies in Physical Education; KINS 158, Motor Learning; and KINS 160, Sport and Exercise Psychology.

Exercise Science Option: 20 units to include BIO 22, Anatomy; BIO 131, Systemic Physiology; KINS 151A, Biomechanics; KINS 152, Exercise Physiology; and KINS 158, Motor Learning.
