Athletic Training - Clinical Program
Pre-Athletic Training Program
The Pre-Athletic Training Program of the ATEP allows students to successfully complete the prerequisites necessary to enter the clinical portion of the program.
Requirements
Complete the admissions packet for the ATEP:
- Submit proof of overall and current semester GPA of 2.80 GPA in college coursework.
- Meet with Program Director for advising and explanation of requirements.
- Complete the following coursework or equivalent with a ‘B’ or better:
- BIO 22, Human Anatomy (C is acceptable)
- KINS 154A, Principles & Techniques in a Clinical Setting
- KINS 156, Care of Athletic Injuries
Athletic Training Program
The clinical portion of the ATEP consists of five semesters of experience in the athletic training facilities. These semesters are divided into five phases of fieldwork. Phase I (KINS 195C) is the observation semester. Phases II through V (KINS 195D) are four full semesters of fieldwork in the three athletic training facilities. Students must formally apply to this part of the program each semester. An interview (with the Program Director and Clinical Instructors) and a submitted application are necessary for admission into KINS 195D, Practicum in Athletic Training. The top students, who qualify, are selected and placed with a clinical instructor for their clinical experience.
Criteria for KINS 195C, Observation in Athletic Training
- Declared Athletic Training major
- Minimum GPA of 2.80 GPA in overall, each semester and major in a minimum of 12 units toward the degree
- Successful completion of the following courses with a B or better grade:
- BIO 22, Human Anatomy (C is acceptable)
- KINS 154A, Principles & Techniques in a Clinical Setting
- KINS 156, Care of Athletic Injuries
- Completed application for admissions packet submitted to Program Director
- Completed application for KINS 195C, Observation in Athletic Training
- Current certification in first aid, AED and CPR
- Proof of current physical exam stating that the student is able to perform the duties of an athletic training student and is current in immunizations and testing
- Proof of Hepatitis B immunization and TB testing
- Signed CSUS ATEP Technical Standard Form
- Proof of professional liability insurance
Requirements for KINS 195C, Observation in Athletic Training
- Attend all class meetings on Wednesdays from 12:30PM to 2:30PM
- Attend all class meetings on Monday night seminars from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. If a seminar is missed, the student must submit a two page typed paper on topic of presentation within one week of missed meeting. If unable to attend, must contact Program Director at least one hour before the meeting.
- Observe in one of the three athletic training facilities during the scheduled day of the week; from open to close. Rotate through all three athletic training facilities throughout the semester
- Assist at assigned athletic events out of the athletic training facilities
- Attend a team physician visit and submit a written report on it
- Complete the competencies for Phase I (must be signed by ACI).
- Complete notebook/portfolio and assignments to be completed and submitted by Monday of exam week.
- Submit signed log sheets by due dates throughout the semester to Program Director.

KINS 195D, Practicum in Athletic Training (Phases II, II, IV, V)
Criteria for KINS 195D, Practicum in Athletic Training
- Declared Athletic Training major
- Minimum GPA of 2.80 GPA in overall, each semester and major in a minimum of 12 units toward the degree.
- Successful completion of KINS 195C, Observation in Athletic Training or challenge exam.
- Completed application for KINS 195D, Practicum in Athletic Training.
- Interview with Program Director and Clinical Instructors. Interview is for initial appointment and if there is a break in enrollment.
- Current certification in first aid, AED and CPR.
- Proof of current physical exam stating that the student is able to perform the duties of an athletic training student and is current in immunizations and testing.
- Proof of Hepatitis B immunization and TB testing.
- Signed CSUS ATEP Technical Standards Form
- Proof of professional liability insurance
Requirements for KINS 195D, Practicum in Athletic Training
- In the assigned athletic training facility under the direct supervision of the assigned ACI, must be available to do clinical experience at the following times:
- Minimum of four days per week from open to close hours
- Most weekends of the semester
- August 1 for fall semester, January 1 for spring semester
- Attend fall athletic trainer workshop
- Attend all class meetings on Monday night seminars from 7:00PM to 9:00PM. If a seminar is missed, the student must submit a two page typed paper on topic of presentation within one week of missed meeting. If unable to attend, must contact Program Director at least one hour before the meeting.
- Complete the clinical proficiencies for Phase (must be signed by ACI)
- Complete all assignments for KINS 195D to be completed and submitted by Monday of exam week:
- ACI/ATS signed log sheets by due dates throughout the semester submitted to Program Director
- Semester self evaluation (two pages typed paper)
- Medical definitions (completed by the end of Phase II)
- Team physician report (see guidelines)
- Assignments for the specific semester
