Interim Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement and Success

Dave became Interim Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement and Success in 2013 after completing a yearlong fellowship with the American Council on Education (ACE). As an ACE fellow at the University of Nevada, Reno, Dave worked with the President and Vice President for Student Services. His fellowship project focused on best practices for integrating Academic Affairs and student services within higher education.

Prior to his fellowship year, Dave was nine-year chair of the Sac State Geology department where he was also a professor of geophysics. During his time as department chair, the Geology Department modernized the curriculum, increased diversity in the department, boosted enrollment, and improved fundraising.

All of Dave’s degrees are in geophysics: he holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley; an MS from the University of Kansas; and a PhD from Louisiana State University. During his academic career, his scientific research focused primarily on the application of geophysics to groundwater hydrology, although he has also published papers in applied math and seismology.

Dave has served on the University Budget Advisory Committee (UBAC) at Sacramento State as well as the University Enterprises, Inc. Board of Directors. He has also chaired the college-level and university tenure and promotion committees and served on the Faculty Senate for two terms.

In his spare time, Dave is an avid guitar player.
