Degree Requirements
Special Major
For those wishing to major in Women's Studies, the program offers students the opportunity to do so through the Special Major. Students pursuing this option are required to complete 36 units of upper division course work. Included in the 36 units are three core courses: WOMS 110-Introduction to Women's Movements, WOMS 115-Introduction to Women's Studies and WOMS 180-Seminar in Feminist Theory. The remaining 27 elective units are chosen from an approved list of courses offered by the Women's Studies department, as well as other departments on campus. Declaring the Special Major requires students to obtain necessary approval. Please contact the department for more information.
Double Major
Those wishing to add Women's Studies as a second major can do so by completing 24 units of upper division course work. Included in the 24 units are three core courses: WOMS 110-Introduction to Women's Movements, WOMS 115-Introduction to Women's Studies and WOMS 180-Seminar in Feminist Theory. The remaining 15 elective units are chosen from an approved list of courses offered by the Women's Studies department, as well as other departments on campus. Declaring the Special Major as your second major requires students to obtain necessary approval. Please contact the department for more information.
Minor
The program also offers students the opportunity to minor in Women's Studies by completing 21 units of upper division course work. Included in the 21 units are three courses: WOMS 110-Introduction to Women's Movements, WOMS 115-Introduction to Women's Studies and WOMS 180-Seminar in Feminist Theory. The remaining 12 elective units are chosen from an approved list of courses offered by the Women's Studies department, as well as other departments on campus. Declaring the Minor in Women's Studies can be done by completing the Change of Major/Minor form.
Special Major Graduate Program
Outstanding graduates who meet the requirements for admission to the Special Major Graduate Degree Program and are eligible for classified admission to a department offering a regular graduate program can undertake an alternative course of study in Women’s Studies leading to a Special Major Master of Arts Degree. The Special Major Graduate Degree requires 20 units comprising Women’s Studies code, service, and cross-listed graduate and undergraduate courses. A student interested in the special Major Graduate program should contact the Women’s Studies Coordinator.
