Director's Message
____________________

Welcome to the Asian American Studies program at California State University, Sacramento! We are a dynamic and growing academic program that is meeting the needs of a dynamic and growing community. According to the 2000 Census, Sacramento is now the city with the 10th largest Asian American and Pacific Islander population in the United States. The program's dedicated faculty is nationally recognized for their teaching skills, scholarly activities, and community service.

Over the next several years the program will be moving from an traditional Asian American Studies program to a more expansive Asian American and Transpacific Studies program. While the emphasis will be firmly on the Asian experience in the United States, greater attention must be placed on the importance of trans-nationalism and comparative diasporic studies. In addition, the program plans to offer courses creatively using web-based technology. This is intended to enhance student learning and to forge a stronger connection between what is taught in the classroom and events in the real world.

Whether you will be taking just one course in Asian American Studies or taking all of the courses we have offer, we know you will learn a lot and you will enjoy what you learn!

Sincerely,
Timothy P. Fong
Director
