The Story of the 1st & 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments, U.S. Army

GOALS

Students will examine and describe the chronology of Filipino American involvement in World War II. Students will identify the contributions of Filipino Americans in World War II.

 

TIME

Two class periods.

 

FORMAT

  1. First class period. Introductory lecture on the history of the Philippines and Filipino labor migration to Hawaii and California. Preview of video, note-taking, class discussion, class exercise, and student assessment.
  2. Second class period.

 

MATERIALS

“An Untold Triumph” video, chalk board, paper, pencils/pens.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

  1. Students will examine and identify key historical events in Filipino American history.
  2. Students will examine and analyze the historical context [causes] of Filipino American migration to Hawaii and California.
  3. Students will provide a chronology of Filipino American immigration and involvement in World War II.
  4. Students will identify the contributions of Filipinos to the US war effort in World War II.

 

PROCEDURES

  1. First Class Period. The instructor will give a brief lecture on the geographical location of the Philippines, the Spanish American War, and Filipino labor migration to Hawaii and California.
  2. Instructor will hand out Video Exercise sheet. The handout will guide students towards the documentary’s key points. The Handout will bring attention to (a) the reasons for Filipino immigration to the US and (b) the events leading to US involvement in World War II. [See attachment: “VIDEO EXERCISE ONE: Video Exercise Handout.”]
  3. Prior to class, instructor will preview and select 15 minutes from the first part of the documentary. Instructor will divide the segment into two or three easily digestible parts.
  4. Students will watch the Documentary and use the Video Exercise Handout to take notes.
  5. Under the instructor’s guidance, students will identify, analyze, and discuss the reasons for Filipino migration to the United States and the events leading to World War II.  The instructor will write these reasons, events, and items on the board.
  6. Chronology Exercise. Students will submit a worksheet that synthesizes these items and create chronologies of (a) Filipino American migration and settlement in Hawaii and California and (b) events leading to US involvement in World War II.
  7. Second Class Period. Prior to class, instructor will preview and select 15 minutes from the middle and last parts of the documentary.
  8. Students will watch the Documentary and use the Video Exercise Handout to take notes on how (a) the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments started and (b) the contributions of Filipino Americans to the US military campaign and victory in the Pacific. [See attachment: “VIDEO EXERCISE TWO: Video Exercise Handout.”]
  9. The instructor will write key items, historical events, and concepts on the board.
  10. Under the instructor’s guidance, students will identify, analyze, and discuss the chronology of (a) the creation of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments and (b) the contributions of Filipino Americans to the US military campaign and victory in the Pacific.
  11. Chronology Exercise. Students will submit a worksheet that synthesizes these items and create chronologies of (a) the creation of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments, and the contributions of Filipino Americans to the US military campaign and victory in the Pacific.

 

ASSESSMENT

  1. Students will be evaluated through the “Video Exercise” sheet and assessed on their written and note-taking skills.
  2. Students will be evaluated through their class exercise that provides a chronology of Filipino American history and assessed on their written and comprehension skills.
