LABOR MIGRATION THEORY: answer ALL the
questions in both Part I & II.
Part I. Carlos BulosanÕs America is in the Heart. According to classic Òpush-pullÓ theory
of immigration, there are ÒpushÓ forces that coerce people to leave their
country of origin, and there are also ÒpullÓ forces that attract people to
their country of destination. Examples of push forces are war, famine and
poverty; pull forces are better economic opportunities, political stability (no
war), and a prosperous society.
For your exam
essay, using Carlos BulosanÕs America is
in the Heart (a) discuss what the ÒpushÓ and ÒpullÓ forces were that caused the migration of Filipinos to
the United States. Then (b)
explain what the social and economic challenges were that Filipinos faced in
the United States.
