ETHN 114: ESSAY QUESTION (40 points) (500 words total, typed, single-spaced)

Please answer ALL these short essays (I and II) for the essay part of your exam.

1. ESSAY: Analyzing the concept of Indian migration.

According to classic “push-pull” theory of immigration, there are “push” forces that coerce people to leave their country of origin, and there are also “pull” forces that attract people to their country of destination. Examples of push forces are war, civil unrest, famine and poverty; pull forces are better economic opportunities, political stability (no war), and a prosperous society. In the case of India, political unrest is one of the reasons for Indian out migration. Using Martha Nussbaum’s The Clash Within, answer these questions about religious violence against women in India.

(A) Explain how the violence in Gujarat started and why it remains a problem in India. 2. ESSAY: PUSH & PULL forces of Filipino immigration and their socio-economic status in Italy.

According to classic “push-pull” theory of immigration, there are “push” forces that coerce people to leave their country of origin, and there are also “pull” forces that attract people to their country of destination. Examples of push forces are war, civil unrest, famine and poverty; pull forces are better economic opportunities, political stability (no war), and a prosperous society. In the case of Filipino immigrants in Italy, the majority of immigrants are women who were immigrating for economic reasons. Using Rachel Parrenas’s book Servants of Globalization, answer these questions about Filipino women immigrants in Italy.
