ABA Adopt a Family 2016
In the spirit of the holidays, Administration & Business Affairs (ABA) continued its annual Adopt a Family program for 2016. Started in 2008, ABA, and a group of dedicated colleagues, have found families either through Adopt a Family or other organizations, to provide gifts to needy families.
For this year’s program, ABA staff were encouraged to purchase and/or donate items directly from a list provided by the family, or contribute monetarily towards the purchase of key items. And ABA delivered.
ABA’s Suzanne Swartz, Elena Compo, Danielle Rogers, Katie Ragle, Alison Vazquez and Stacy Hayano all deserve praise for purchasing wonderful personalized items for the family. In addition, over $400 was collected from thoughtful staff.
To stretch the donation, volunteer shoppers were deployed to purchase items from the family’s wish list, which included: warm clothing for the family, comforter/sheet sets, a set of pots and pans, towels, an area rug, and of course, lots of fun toys for the kids. Special thanks to Elena Compo and Priscilla Llamas-McKaughan for doing the bulk of the shopping, and to Hebe Mares, Elisa Chohan, Sarah VanAdrighem, Danielle Rogers, and Bob Bartley for helping wrap all of the gifts.
In mid-December, Priscilla, Elisa Chohan, Margaret Hwang, and Andrew Stiffler delivered the gifts to the family’s home. Willonda, the mother, planned to keep the gifts hidden as a surprise from Santa for her two children, niece, and nephew. Due to the many generous contributions, we were able to get many of the items on the kids’ wish lists. Willonda and her eldest daughter Knadya, wrote letters to us to show their appreciation. Marvin, the five year old, also painted us a few paintings!
We in ABA are very honored to have participated in this rewarding endeavor. Thank you again to everyone who helped contribute to this year’s Adopt a Family program! Happy Holidays!
