Wednesday, October 11, 2017 - Air Quality on Campus

The air conditions at our campus are being impacted by the nearby wildfires. There are higher than average levels of particulate in the air. Air Quality Index (AQI) currently on campus is from 101 to 150, which is categorized as "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups." “Good” air quality is quantified by the AQI from 0-50, “Moderate” from 51-100, and “Unhealthy” from 151-200. The highest level on the scale is 500.

Although the general public is not likely to be affected at this AQI range, persons with heart and lung disease, older adults and children are at greater risk from the presence of particles in the air.

A link for real time information is http://www.sparetheair.com/

Any work on campus that generates additional air particles such as leaf blowing should be postponed until later in the week. Reducing your time spent outdoors is helpful if you are a sensitive individual. Sensitive individuals should reduce strenuous outdoor activity, including athletic activity. If you are not a sensitive individual you may not feel effected by the air quality.

Sensitive individuals may also choose to use a “N-95” dust mask that covers their nose and mouth. A dust mask that is not marked “N-95” will not be effective.

The air is expected to clear somewhat tomorrow.

For questions or concerns, please call Risk Management Services at 916-278-6119.

Monday, July 3, 2017 - Sequoia Hall Fire Alarm: Fire Watch July 5 - July 14, 2017

As Sequoia Hall transitions to the new fire alarm system, we will have a 10-day period during which the new system is brought on-line.  Per the State Fire Marshal, we must put the building on 24-hour fire watch while this transition takes place.  Our contractor performing this work, Vanden Bos Electric, has hired a licensed and bonded security firm to perform the fire watch, which includes walking the building and checking every room on a continuous basis.  While we realize this process may be somewhat disruptive, it is necessary and mandatory per the State Fire Marshal.

We appreciate your patience while we work to improve the safety of our campus.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the project manager for this project, Ray Keck, at 278-2815.
