Frequently Asked Questions
Who do I call if I receive a parking citation?
Parking and parking enforcement is handled by the University Transportation and Parking Services (UTAPS), not the University Police Department. The UTAPS office is in the University Office Park, located at 7667 Folsom Boulevard, a little over a half-mile from the main campus. Their phone number is (916) 278-7275 (PARK).
What is the jurisdiction of the CSUS Police? Is it just campus and campus related events, like an off-campus basketball game? Or, does the jurisdiction radiate from campus and if so, how far?
In general, the primary jurisdiction is one mile from the campus even though the Penal Code says that we have jurisdiction throughout the state. Our officers also patrol CSUS owned properties in the city and county. We often get called by the police and sheriff to assist them on campus-related cases that occur outside the campus.
Further, some of our calls dictate that we go off campus to follow-up on leads. For example, a theft of a wallet or purse on campus may result in the illegal usage of the victim's credit card some place off campus. Our officers are considered generalists and are responsible for the follow-up in their own cases.
Are all reports made to the police included in the Media Log?
Incidents and crimes reported to the department, as well as officer-initiated arrests are included in the log. Most of our activity fits within these categories. Reports that are not released typically involve investigations where releasing information would jeopardize an on-going investigation. If anyone is arrested as a result of the investigation, the arrest will be reported after the person has been taken into custody.
By the way, the police Media Log, generated by our computerized dispatch system, represents a minimum of 60 days of activity. The Media Log is available to the general public at our front counter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Media Log is also available online at http://www.csus.edu/aba/police/news-and-alerts/media-log.html.
How do I obtain a copy of a police report?
Copies of police reports will only be provided to victims, the victim's authorized representative with written permission from the victim, insurance companies, or any person suffering bodily injury or property damage loss. Reports involving juvenile suspects will only be released with a juvenile court order.
Although most requests will be processed upon receipt, the law allows 10 days for a determination to be made as to the release of the report. Please allow 5 days for the completion and processing of the report.
There is a $5.00 charge for copies of police reports, payable at the Cashier's Office located on the first floor of Lassen Hall.
How do I register my bicycle or obtain a California bicycle license?
The registration and licensing of bicycles is a service provided free of charge by the University Police Department. Simply bring your bicycle to our front counter at your earliest convenience.
For your convenience, you can download the bicycle registration form before coming to our office.
You will need to show a campus or government-issued photo identification to complete the registration process.
A California Bicycle License will be issued to you so that it can be attached to the frame of your bicycle. If you ride your bicycle to school or live in the dorms, we encourage you to register and license your bicycle through our department if you have not done so already.
You may also want to engrave your bicycle with your California Driver's License or California ID Card number. If your bicycle is later stolen, the serial number and description of your bicycle can be entered into the Automated Property System that is accessed by local law enforcement. Chances of recovery greatly improve when this information is on file.
How do I obtain a CSUS Police Department patch?
We receive numerous requests for our shoulder patch from collectors. However, due to security issues, we no longer release our patch to the public. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but feel it is necessary for the safety and security of the campus community.
Where is the CSUS Police Department located?
The CSUS Police Department is located in the Public Safety Building, which is on the southeast side of the campus, just east of Parking Structure III. Maps and directions to the campus are available online.
