April:

  • Month-Long:
    • Housing & Residential Life hosts their annual energy competition during the month of April to see which building can conserve the most energy!
    • ESO hosts Simply Straws #PledgeAgainstPlasticStraws:
      • From April 1st - April 30th, Sac State will be participating in the #PledgeAgainstPlasticStraws 2018 Campus Challenge. During the month of April we will compete with other schools to try to gather the most pledges against plastic straws at our school. Pledges from students, faculty, and staff will be collected at simplystraws.com/CalStateSacramento once the month begins. Each person who pledges will get a coupon for a free reusable glass straw($5 shipping) from Simply Straws. ESO will be tabling in the library quad occasionally throughout the month to collect online pledges and advertise upcoming events.
      • Earth Day is an annual day of recognition celebrated around the world on April 22nd. This year Sacramento State is celebrating ‘Earth Month’ with various events throughout campus and the surrounding community all April long. With our Carbon Commitment signed by President Nelsen in 2016 in place, guiding our campus towards a goal of reaching carbon neutrality by reducing and off-setting our greenhouse gas emissions, we understand more strongly than ever that collaboration is the key to our sustainability success. Highlights of what’s going on around campus and beyond below demonstrate a strong sense of collaboration representing students, faculty, and staff’s efforts to make Sac State a leader in sustainability. All open events listed below are free.
  • 5th Thrive on Plants (TOPs) Club hosts Dr. Ernie Bodai’s presentation: Lifestyle Medicine: The Cancer Prescription at 6pm, at Folsom Hall 1050 (open event)
  • 7th Environmental Student Organization (ESO) will be joining Dr. Stevens from the Environmental Studies department on a rare trip to the usually restricted Jepson Prairie Preserve to view and tour the vernal pools during their anticipated annual bloom. If you would like to participate in this event, RSVP by texting 916-420-6468. Carpooling will be arranged from Serna Plaza at Sac State. (open event)
  • 8th Sac State students volunteer as Sustainability Coordinators at the 8th Annual Credit Union SACTOWN Run to educate runners and community members on the proper waste disposal bins to reduce landfill waste from the run. (open event)
  • 9th Sacramento State tables at the Green Technology Summit. This event is free to students! Register here with the Free Keynote and Expo Badge.
  • 9th California Water Boards hosts open public meeting for: Water Quality in the Lower American River Parkway, from 1pm-4pm, at the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District, Main Admin Offices, 10060 Goethe Road, Sacramento, CA 95827. Representatives from Sac State will be in attendance. (open event)
  • 9th Sacramento State attends Creek Week's Creek Clean-Up and Celebration, which is a collaboration between CA Department of Water Resources, Environmental Justice Coalition for Water, and Valley Foothill Watersheds Collaborative. The Creek Clean-Up runs from 9-11:30am. The Creek Celebration is from 12-2pm, allowing individuals to learn more about the creek and other community events.   • 17th Sac State Sustainability hosts students from Gateway Community Charter School on a campus Sustainability Tour & tour of the BAC Yard (closed event)
  • 19th Sac State Sustainability presents Campus Composting Practices at Rosemont High School (closed event)
  • 19th Hornet Republicans and ESO hosts: Carbon pricing as a Key Climate Solution presentation, from 6pm-7:30pm, at Mendocino Hall 1003 (open event)
  • 22nd Environmental Studies department Professor Dr. Stevens hosts Earth Day Celebration at Bushy Lake, from 1pm-4pm. Musicians, drummers and singers welcome. Snacks provided. Bushy Lake is located in the American River Parkway, behind Cal Expo Gate 12, enter at the end of Ethan Way. Wear close toed shoes, long pants, layers, hat and sun glasses. Please be on time to walk in as a group. (open event)
  • 22nd Next Generation will be tabling at Environmental Council of Sacramento(ECOS)'s annual Earth Day event at Southside Park, taking place from 11am-2pm
  • 24th Sac State Sustainability hosts students from Gateway Community Charter School on a campus Sustainability Tour & BAC Yard (closed event)
  • 24th Student Fashion Association (SFA) will be hosting a Pop-Up Boutique to Promote Sustainability Fashion from 10am-1pm in the Cypress Room(first floor on University Union near the University Ballroom).
  • 26th TOPs hosts Timaree Hagenburger, MPH, RD, EP-c, a.k.a. The Nutrition Professor’s presentation: Brain Health and Nutrition – Use your fork to protect your brain! At Mendocino Hall 1003, starting at 6pm. Come learn about how nutrition affects the brain. 

May:

  • 3rd Sustainability Team tables May is Bike Month event, 10am - 2pm at the Guy West Plaza
  • 4th Sustainability Steering Committee Meeting 
  • 4th Environmental Student Organization (ESO) will be joining American River Parkway Foundation at the Discovery Park Clean Up from 9am-12pm. Anyone can come and help clean up the site!
  • 10th Sac State Sustainability will be attending Breathe Fest - Home of the 42nd Annual Clean Air Wards hosted by Breathe California, running from 5:30-9pm. Student tickets are $25 each with promocode sacstate, register here!
