About the Vice President & Chief Financial Officer


Ming-Tung “Mike” Lee serves as the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer for California State University, Sacramento. As such, he leads the Administration and Business Affairs (ABA) division in a variety of administrative, business, financial and operational services supporting the University’s mission, in addition to providing financial oversight for several auxiliary and affiliate groups. Currently, under his direction, ABA is managing $290 million dollars in capital improvement projects that focus on optimizing student-learning environments. 

Dr. Lee has more than twenty-five years of experience in public higher education as a professor and in senior and executive level management. Most recently, Dr. Lee served as Sacramento State’s interim provost for thirteen months. In this position, he was most successful in designing and launching the ‘Finish in Four’ graduation initiative, aimed to enable students to take 30 units per year, tracking them for timely graduation. In just the first year of implementation, the number of freshman taking 15 units per semester rose by nearly 400%. In order to meet the new demand, under Dr. Lee’s leadership, Academic Affairs hired 111 new faculty members in 2016 and 2017, and added 525 new course sections and more than 12,000 additional seats.

Prior to his appointment as interim provost, Dr. Lee forged great success as the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer since 2010. In this role, he directed the completion of the campus Capital Master Plan with a key focus on sustainability and visionary growth of the University.

Prior to becoming Vice President for Administration/CFO, Dr. Lee held positions of professor; faculty senator; chair of the Department of Management in the College of Business Administration; special assistant to the President for planning; associate vice president and dean for Academic Programs; and vice provost of Academic Affairs. 

Currently, Dr. Lee serves as the executive committee chair of the California State University Risk Management Authority (CSURMA), which provides insurance coverage for the CSU system. He also currently serves as a board member of the Asian Pacific Island Caucus Institute and the Power Inn Alliance of Sacramento. Most recently, Dr. Lee was the recipient of the 2016 Chang-Lin Tien Leadership in Education award and served as the California State University Chief Administrators and Business Officers (CABO) chair.

In addition to the recognitions above, Dr. Lee was selected as an American Council Education Fellow in 2001 and has completed three leadership programs: The Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education (MLE); Leadership Development Program for Higher Education (LDPHE); and Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP).

Dr. Lee holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from Tunghai University, Taichung, Taiwan, 1983; a Master of Arts degree in international commerce from the University of Kentucky, 1986; and a doctoral degree in business administration/marketing from the University of Kentucky, 1990.
