10 Facts About Sac State

A World-Class Education in a Vibrant Urban Oasis

Sacramento State, affectionately called Sac State, is an outstanding and affordable comprehensive university just a few miles from California's Capitol. (Visit our page on "The Capital's University.")

Classrooms, labs, offices, and other facilities are nestled in a 3,500-tree urban forest alongside the American River. In addition to the bustling University life, all that Sacramento has to offer is moments away.

Our exceptional faculty is dedicated to student success, with one professor for every 27 students and an average of 34 students in each classroom. Sac State's legacy is its proud alumni, who make up the heart of the region's workforce and some of its finest leaders.

Among our many Points of Pride:

  • Our Construction Management Department has boasted 100 percent job placement since 2011, and our graduates are managing major construction projects throughout the region – and beyond.
  • Sac State's CIMERA (Center for Interdisciplinary Molecular Education, Research and Advancement) is a state-of-the-art lab dedicated to cell and molecular biology, and biochemistry research and education.
  • Our students consistently win top honors at CSUPERB, the CSU competition that matches them with faculty scholars to solve real-world biotechnology problems.
  • The Capital Fellows Programs are consistently ranked as one of the nation's top 10 internships.
  • Sac State offers two independent doctorates, in Physical Therapy and Educational Leadership.
  • We are the home of the nation's second-largest Criminal Justice program.
  • The Office of Water Programs is a global leader in water- and wastewater-operator training.
  • Each year, Sac State's School of Nursing graduates 200-250 skilled nurses, who average between a 95 percent and a 100 percent passage rate on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's licensure examination (NCLEX).
  • The University's Honors Program provides highly motivated undergraduates with challenging and stimulating learning experiences in small class settings.

Looking to the future, Sacramento State's master plan is a blueprint for campus growth over the next 20 years. Among the proposals are a new science center, a new events center, new classroom buildings, and a Grand Central Quad. A new residence hall with sweeping views of the American River will open in time for the Fall 2017 semester.

Growth and Success: Sac State Since 1947

Sacramento State had rather humble beginnings, starting out in 1947 in rented quarters at a local junior college. Within six years, the fledgling Sacramento State had settled at its permanent site alongside the American River, not far from California's Capitol.

Since then, Sacramento State has grown into one of the nation's top regional universities, led for the past 12 years by President Alexander Gonzalez, who retires at the end of the 2014-15 academic year. He leaves his successor, Dr. Robert S. Nelsen, and the University poised for continued success and an ever-growing presence in the Sacramento region.
