Sacramento State, affectionately called Sac State, is an outstanding and affordable comprehensive university just a few miles from California's Capitol. (Visit our page on "The Capital's University.")
Classrooms, labs, offices, and other facilities are nestled in a 3,500-tree urban forest alongside the American River. In addition to the bustling University life, all that Sacramento has to offer is moments away.
Our exceptional faculty is dedicated to student success, with one professor for every 27 students and an average of 34 students in each classroom. Sac State's legacy is its proud alumni, who make up the heart of the region's workforce and some of its finest leaders.
Looking to the future, Sacramento State has undertaken more than $250 million in major construction projects, including a state-of-the-art Science Complex, a 1,750-space parking structure and visitors center, an extensive renovation and expansion of the University Union, and a 416-bed residence hall. Over the next two years, the University will be transformed in ways not seen since the campus was carved out of riverside hops fields and peach orchards in the early 1950s.
Students choose Sacramento State because they want something special in a college experience. California's capital university is in the heart of the state's political, economic, and cultural center, and our students come here to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others, to find and develop their passions, and to live those passions beyond the classroom.
Take a walk along the snaking, tree-lined pathways to find students poring over papers spread out on cafe tables, lounging in vast, grassy quads, and heading to any of the hundreds of on-campus events each semester. Check out one of the seven art galleries. Cheer on our 21 intercollegiate sports teams. See the world around you with fresh eyes and realize that here is where you'll find the tools and opportunities to scale heights and reach goals you never imagined.
Beyond campus, Sacramento – the nation's "Farm to Fork" capital – is home to a one-of-a-kind gastronomic scene, prominent professional sports franchises, a vibrant arts and music culture, and exciting nightlife. Natural amenities on and off campus offer outdoor adventures of every sort: Biking and hiking trails, rivers, lakes, and mountains make up the city's backyard.
Our students also enjoy unique career opportunities, from politics to business, philanthropy to the arts, and more. If you want a future in California's capital region and beyond, a degree from its capital university is your ticket. So rather than asking "Why Sac State?" the real question is: What are you waiting for?
Sacramento State had rather humble beginnings, starting out in 1947 in rented quarters at a local junior college. Within six years, the fledgling Sacramento State had settled at its permanent site alongside the American River, not far from California's Capitol.
Since then, Sacramento State has grown into one of the nation’s top regional universities. Under the leadership of Dr. Robert S. Nelsen, who became Sac State’s eighth permanent president in July 2015, the University is poised for continued success and an ever-growing presence in the Sacramento region.
