Frequently Asked Questions regarding Freshman Orientation
Q: Do I have to attend Orientation?
-
A: YES. Orientation attendance is required for all incoming freshmen. Orientation provides the most complete academic advising, and an outstanding way to familiarize yourself with the campus and meet other new students like yourself. Before you register for classes you will need to be advised on appropriate courses to take. Orientation is the only advisement available to new incoming students.
In addition, parents /siblings cannot attend Orientation in place of a student attending. It is important for the student to learn first-hand the information and expectations of Sac State.
Q: How do I get Orientation information mailed to me?
-
A: All freshmen who have been accepted to Sacramento State will automatically be mailed information in early April. If you have not received any information, call (916) 278-7841 Monday through Friday from 10:00am - 3:00pm.
Q: Is there a disadvantage to not attending Orientation?
-
A: YES! If you do not attend Orientation a registration hold will be placed on your records and you will not be allowed to register for classes. If you are unable to attend Orientation due to a hardship or family emergency, contact the New Student Orientation office at (916) 278-7841.
Q: Do I have to take placement tests?
-
A: All new undergraduate students MUST satisfy the requirements of the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) test PRIOR to registering for classes, or have their admission cancelled-except those who have exemption scores on SAT, ACT, or AP exams or have completed equivalent college courses (C or better). It is important that you take the EPT and ELM as soon as possible in order to have the results for your advising session. For more detailed information click here ELM/EPT. New students will not be permitted to register for classes until Sac State has received your ELM/EPT scores or proof of exemption.
Q: What are my Orientation fees paying for?
A: The fees to attend Orientation are paying for all the Orientation materials you have been mailed and the ones you will receive when you arrive (New Student Guide, Advising & Registration Handbook, Student Planner). They also pay for meals and staffing. Financial aid does not pay for Orientation fees.
Q: Do I have to attend F.R.O.S.H. Night?
A: No. F.R.O.S.H. Night is an optional program that takes place between Day 1 & 2 of your orientation session. We hope that you would want to join us and meet your fellow classmates, participate in a campus activity, and have fun. This is a terrific opportunity even if you will be commuting to Sac State this fall.
Q: Should my family and friends attend?
A: We invite you to bring your parents as we have a special program for them, which runs concurrently, but separately from, the student program. They will have an opportunity to ask questions, to learn about the services and activities available, to meet other parents and University officials, and to address concerns they have about sending their sons and daughters off to college.
Friends cannot accompany you unless both of you are scheduled for the same Orientation session.
Q: Is there anything I need to bring to Orientation?
-
A: You should bring copies of your EPT/ELM and or AP test scores. You should also bring $9 to get your One Card (student I.D.) while at Orientation. If you have already purchased the new 2008-2010 Sac State Catalog, bring that with you. Otherwise, you can purchase one at the bookstore for $12. This is also a day to talk with Financial Aid or Veteran's Affairs so you may want to bring any paperwork required by those offices.
Q: Who can I call with questions?
-
A: The friendly and knowledgeable Orientation assistants are ready to answer your questions. Call (916) 278-7841 Monday through Friday from 10:00am - 3:00pm or email us at orient.reservations@csus.edu
