Frequently Asked Questions: Parents

Q: Why should I attend Orientation with my student?

A: We encourage parents and guardians to attend Orientation so they will be in a better position to encourage and support their student while he/she is pursuing a degree at Sacramento State. During Orientation, parents will learn about the academic requirements necessary for their student to earn a degree and numerous programs and services to help them succeed.

Q: What are student and guest Orientation fees paying for?

A: The fees to attend Orientation are paying for all the materials mailed to the student and the additional materials you and your student will receive when you arrive: New Student Guide, Family Guide, Advising & Registration Handbook, Student Planner. They also pay for meals and staffing. Financial Aid does not pay for Orientation fees.

Q: How does my student pay for their registration fees?

A: After students register for classes, they will need to visit their My Sac State account and check the Student Center for account information. Students MUST pay their registration fees during the period indicated. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of classes they registered for. If you have filed for financial aid (loans, grants, work-study), you should contact Financial Aid. You must submit a FAFSA form to be considered for aid. You can check the status of your awards on your My Sac State page.

Q: My student is a first time freshman. Why should they attend F.R.O.S.H. Night?

A: Although attending F.R.O.S.H. Night is optional, it is a terrific way for your student to get exposed to campus life while meeting new students. We have a number of activities planned to help create bonds and friendships. Even if your student will be commuting to campus in the fall, attending will provide them an opportunity to experience living on campus - even if it is for one night.

One of the biggest perks of F.R.O.S.H. Night is the assistance of the orientation leader staff. They will be available during the evening to help your student put together their class schedule. Your student will register for classes on the second day of Orientation. We find that the students who attended F.R.O.S.H. Night had the least trouble and were usually the first ones to complete registration. No kidding!!!

Q: Is there anything my student needs to bring to Orientation?

A: Freshmen should bring copies of their EPT/ELM and or AP test scores. Transfers should bring unofficial copies of their transcripts. In addition, students should bring $9 to get their One Card (student I.D.). If your student has already purchased the new 2008-2010 Sac State Catalog, bring that with you. Otherwise, they can purchase one at the bookstore for $12. This is also a day to talk with Financial Aid or Veteran's Affairs so you may want to bring any paperwork required by those offices.

Q: Who can I call with questions?

A: The friendly and knowledgeable Orientation assistants are ready to answer your questions. Call (916) 278-7841 Monday through Friday from 10:00am - 3:00pm or email us at orient.reservations@csus.edu
