What Should Parents Know?

Since your son/daughter applied to Sac State, they have received a lot of information via their My Sac State account. We know you want to help your student prepare for college. To ensure you are informed of the important information and timelines, we have enclosed the following information.

Tasks to accomplish BEFORE attending New Student Orientation:

Creating a Saclink Account - Sac State assigns a My Sac State account to each student. Students access this site with their Sac State email account - Saclink. If your student has not created their account, they should create it as soon as possible.

Admissions Process - If your student had been admitted to Sac State, they would have received a large white envelope via postal mail. This packet included their acceptance letter as well as information on placement tests, Orientation and campus housing.

If they have not received an acceptance packet, your student should check their My Sac State account for messages. They might need to submit documentation to complete their application beforedecision.

Visit Campus - If you and your student have not had the opportunity to visit our beautiful campus, we encourage you to do so. You can arrange a campus tour online.

Accept Admissions- It is important that your student notify Sac State that they wish to attend this Fall. Your student accomplishes this by going to their My Sac State account and click Student Center and then Admissions. There will be a button to "accept admissions" If your student doesn't do this, they will not be notified of class registration information. This is VERY important.

Housing/ Apartments - If your student is interested in living on campus or looking for local apartments and roommates, you can contact Housing and Residential Life at (916) 278-6655. If you would like your student to live on campus, we encourage you to contact Housing as soon as possible.

Testing Information - Prior to registering for classes, your student may be required to take the Elementary Level Math (ELM) and/or the English Placement Test (EPT). Your student could be exempt from taking these exams as a result of SAT/ACT/AP test scores or successful completion of college level English and math with a C- or higher grade. For details on the exams and expemption, visit ELM/EPT.

If a student needs to take the ELM or EPT exam, they are notified via their My Sac State acount. All test results and exemptions must be on file with Admissions before your student can register for classes.

If your student has completed (or is planning on taking) an AP exam, make sure they request the scores are submitted to Sac State. Many students forget to do this.

Attend Orientation - If your student is a first-time freshman, they are required to attend Freshman Orientation. Visit Freshman Orientation for program details and dates. If your student is transfering to Sac State, they are highly encouraged to attend. Visit Transfer Orientation for program details and dates. We hope you will attend Orientation with your student.

Tasks to accomplish AFTER attending New Student Orientation:

Final Transcripts - Upon completion of high school or their final semester at their previous college, your student should request a final, official, transcript be sent to Sac State. This includes any AP scores. Mail to Enrollment Services, 6000 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95819-6048.

Paying Registration Fees - About two days after your student registers for classes during Orientation, the bill for their registration fees will be located on their My Sac State account in the Student Center. Students MUST pay their registration fees during the period indicated. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of their classes. If they filed for financial aid (loans, grants, work-study), they should contact Financial Aid. Your student must submit a FAFSA form to be considered for aid. They can check the status of their awards via their My Sac State account.

Buying Textbooks - Although your student registers for classes during Orientation, most of the text books for their classes will not be stocked and available until August. Your student can order books (new and used) online through our Bookstore.

Immunizations - All new students born after January 1, 1957 are required to show proof of immunity to measles and rubella. Students 18 years and younger are required to show proof of immunization against hepatitis B. Your student should be prepared to present copies of their immunization records to the Sac State Health Center. Verifications of immunity will be requested during their first semester. Failure to comply with this requirement will prevent them from registering in future semesters.

"Orientation is important because it familiarizes students to the University so they're not so nervous when school starts."
