Frequently Asked Questions: Transfer Students
Q: Do I have to attend?
-
A: Orientation is optional for transfer students. Why would you NOT want to get academic advising and campus information prior to registering for fall classes? Some transfer students don't attend because they believe all of their lower division requirements have been completed at their previous college and they already know how college works. This is a common misconception.
Q: Is there a disadvantage to not attending Orientation?
A: Students who attend Transfer Orientation have register for classes before students who do not attend. If you do not attend Orientation, it may be difficult to get academic advising. The major departments set aside these dates/times to meet specifically with new students.
Q: How do I get Orientation information mailed to me?
-
A: All transfer students who have been admitted to Sacramento State will automatically be mailed information beginning early April. If you have not received any information, call (916) 278-7841 Monday through Friday from 10:00am - 3:00pm.
Q: What are my Orientation fees paying for?
A: The fees to attend Orientation are paying for all the Orientation materials you have been mailed and the ones you will receive when you arrive: New Student Guide, Advising & Registration Handbook, Student Planner. They also pay for meals and staffing. Financial aid does not pay for Orientation fees.
Q: When do I register for classes?
-
A: Transfer students who have been admitted to Sac State will register for fall courses in during Orientation. Students who do not attend Orientation will register in late June.
Q: Can I bring a guest with me?
A: Yes. During your Orientation day, we offer a separate program for parents and spouses. There is a fee for this program. They will attend some sessions on their own and others with you. You can view both the Transfer Student Schedule and the Transfer Parent/Spouse Schedule online.
If you bring a guest other than a parent or spouse (friend, sibbling), they will attend the Parent sessions. They will not be permitted to attend all activities with you.
Q: Is there anything I need to bring to Orientation?
-
A: You will need to bring a copy of your transcripts or a list of courses you have taken. (Transcripts submitted to Admissions will not be available during orientation.) You should also bring $9 to get your OneCard (student I.D.). If you have already purchased a Sac State Catalog, bring that with you. Otherwise, you can purchase one at the bookstore for $12. This is also a good day to talk with Financial Aid and Veteran's Affairs therefore you might want to bring any paperwork related to those offices. It would also be helpful to students transferring from schools OTHER than California Community Colleges to bring your previous school's catalog - if you have one. CSU transfer students: It is recommended that you bring a copy of the catalog from the CSU campus you are transferring from.
Q: Who can I call with questions?
A: The friendly and knowledgeable Orientation assistants are ready to answer your questions. Call (916) 278-7841 Monday through Friday from 10:00am - 3:00pm or email us at orient@csus.edu
