The Office of Academic Affairs is inviting applicants for the position of Director of First Year Programs.  The Director of First Year Programs will provide administrative coordination and leadership for curriculum and faculty in the University Learning Communities, First Year Seminars, and other GE collaborative programs under development.  The Director reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies.
 
In this capacity, the Director works with individual faculty, Department Chairs, and Deans to develop the course combinations, monitor the scheduling and success of these curricular programs, and to develop in-service training and monitor course quality and congruence for First Year Seminars.  Collaboration with the First Year Experience (FYE) Coordinator (Student Affairs) in the promotion of programs, as well as in relation to the FYE Peer Mentor Program, is also essential.  The Director is also responsible for grant writing to provide additional fiscal support for FYE and other Graduation Initiative Academic Programs.
 
This is a three-year position with the option of renewal.  In addition to a 6 WTU per semester re-assignment, the Director will be expected to teach at least one course in First Year Programs per year.
 
Minimum Qualifications: Full-time tenured faculty member of California State University, Sacramento with a demonstrated interest in First Year Programs. Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and effectively with faculty and administrators. Evidence of leadership skills.

Job Description - Director of First Year Programs

The General Education Office is responsible for coordinating the University's General Education Program. The office monitors all General Education courses for availability and compliance with university policy. The office administers GE policy and acts as a liaison from Academic Affairs to the 

Faculty Senate General Education Policy and Graduation Requirements Committee. The General Education Office is a resource for information about General Education. New and innovative General Education programs are explored and evaluated by this office. The General Education Office is responsible for implementing the CSUS WPJ policy and the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement.

The General Education Office acts as the "home department" for special majors and First Year Seminar courses. The University's Learning Community and First Year Experience Program, the General Education Honors Program, and the Writing Across the Curriculum Program are administered by this office.

What does General Education Mean to Us?

The Secret Names
(written for the GEmmy Awards & GE Recognition Event, December 2, 2011)

To be a child again, knowing books could change the world. Running up the narrow stairs into soft, yellow light of the old Carnegie branch, and there they are, walls of them. Librarian smiles at Dad and me, kid exchanging finished stack for more.

Now I love to read the titles of courses I will never get to take: The Nature of Culture; Form, Space, Vision; Primate Behavior. If I took all three at once, could I tell new stories, speak new tongues,
or just appear an educated gibbon at an art opening in midtown?

Clicking through the college catalog I can see him - General Ed lurking deep inside, chanting the secret names of what we hope to come to understand: The Joy of Garbage, Urban Geography, Visualization, and he winks at us. What comes from all this work?

Community Engagement, Children and Television, The List Poem: No, not “knowing,” really, but still we climb towards that warm & yellow light.
