NEW OPTIONS

Graduate Program in Kinesiology - Sport Psychology Option

Justification: We are proposing the addition of a Sport Psychology option within the Sport Performance concentration (New proposed name: Movement Studies). Many students are looking for programs that have clearly defined course offerings with an emphasis in sport psychology. While we currently offer these courses, by offering an option in sport psychology, students will have transcripts that indicate their emphasis in the subdiscipline.

Graduate Program in Kinesiology - Sport Pedagogy Option

Justification: We are proposing the addition of a Sport Pedagogy option within the Sport Performance concentration (New proposed name: Movement Studies) . Many students are looking for programs that have clearly defined course offerings with an emphasis in teaching and coaching pedagogy. The majority of our graduate students are currently employed in one/both of these areas and are seeking graduate degrees that will enhance their knowledge in their career field. While we currently offer these courses, by offering an option in sport pedagogy, students will have transcripts that indicate their emphasis in the subdiscipline and allow for a more directed program of study. Moreover, there are increasing opportunities for advanced study and employment in sport pedagogy at universities across the country. This option will better prepare students for these opportunities.

NON SUBSTATIVE CHANGES

Graduate Program in Kinesiology - Movement Studies - Name Change

Justification: We are proposing a change in the name of the Sport Performance concentration to be retitled Movement Studies. For years this name, Sport Performance, has served as an umbrella term for many subdisciplines in Kinesiology. For some, the title Sport Performance has been too vague, and not indicative of the profession. After looking at several other CSU graduate programs in Kinesiology, as well as departments across the nation, we are proposing the new title of Movement Studies, which we view to be more inclusive of the subdisciplines, while serving more specifically with the term movement as opposed to sport.

Graduate Program in Kinesiology - Movement Studies - Add Elective Choices

Justification: For many years, the core for the Sport Performance Concentration (New proposed name: Movement Studies) has been to take 2 of the following 3 courses: KINS 203, KINS 236, and KINS 262. In an effort to allow for more choices, while exposing students to an additional course, we are proposing to increase the choices from 3 to 5 and increase the requirement from 2 to 3. Students will choose 3 from the following 5 courses: KINS 203, KINS 236, KINS 258, KINS 262, KINS 270. Additionally, this will support each class in enrollment and allow for flexibility in scheduling.
