Chevelle Newsome serves as Dean of Graduate Studies and Acting Dean of Undergraduate Studies at California State University, Sacramento. Her offices have the overall responsibility for the academic monitoring of students and provides oversight of the curriculum review processes and academic approval of graduate, credential, and undergraduate courses and programs. University-wide centers and programs, including the California Pre-doctoral Program, the Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program, the Community Engagement Center, the Center for College Readiness, the First Year Experience Program, the General Education Honors Program, the Graduate Preparation Academy, the McNair Scholars Program, the One Book Program, and the Writing Across the Curriculum Program are also administered by the Offices of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies.
Dr. Newsome’s research interests include ethics in public relations and politics in everyday human interaction. She has published several articles relating to the communication of race in American society and women’s issues in healthcare. In addition, Dr. Newsome is co-author of a resource book on political commentary in the United States. Her university committee and service activities include academic recruitment¸ curriculum development¸ collegiate strategic planning, and diversifying the university professoriate. Her community service work includes serving as communication consultant to various non-profit organizations focused on child welfare and decreasing health disparities in minority communities.
As the Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Newsome is responsible for the oversight of the university’s graduate and post-baccalaureate programs and advises on policies and regulations pertaining to graduate study, admissions, graduate preparation and student support programs, graduate fellowships, and the granting of graduate degrees and certificates.
As Acting Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Newsome is responsible for oversight of the university’s General Education program, and undergraduate Special Majors and Minors; she also serves as the Dean for Undeclared students who are not yet affiliated with a particular College. She provides leadership on the university’s Graduation Initiative, as well as other student success programs. Dr. Newsome also advises, coordinates, and implements all CSU undergraduate academic policies, procedures, and development projects.
She earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Oklahoma.
