Joseph F. Sheley

Provost and Vice President for
Academic Affairs

Joseph F. Sheley is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Sacramento. He served the University in 2005-06 as Executive Vice President, in 2004-05 as Director of Alumni Relations, and from 1996 to 2005 as Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies.  In addition to his duties as chief academic officer of the University, Dr. Sheley is responsible for the coordination of the Destination 2010 initiative to make Sacramento State the campus of choice for students throughout the West, development of a branch campus in Placer County, and intercollegiate athletics.

An alumnus of Sacramento State, Dr. Sheley returned to his alma mater in 1996.  Prior to that, with a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, he was a faculty member for 21 years at Tulane University where he also held the positions of chair of the Department of Sociology and faculty head of the University Senate.  He has been awarded numerous grants and has published extensively in his general area of interest, criminology, and his particular field of expertise, patterns of acquisition and use of firearms by juveniles.  He is a proponent of regional partnership roles for contemporary metropolitan universities and of the systematic application of university teaching and scholarship to issues of regional, social, and economic development.
