COMMENDATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS BY THE REVIEW TEAM FOR
THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

COMMENDATIONS TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Department of Civil Engineering is commended for the following: · The high quality educational programs in Civil Engineering and Construction Management.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

It is recommended that

  1. the Construction Management (CM) coordinator, the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Civil Engineering (CE) department review the CM program to reduce the number of units required for graduation. (P. 3)
  2. the CM program consider eliminating the required business minor to achieve a reduction in the total number of units required for graduation. (p. 3)
  3. the CM program allow students to, on a case-by-case basis, use the 190 sequence for completing their degrees as a substitute for missed courses. (p. 3)
  4. the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and the CE Department faculty review the undergraduate program in CE with the intent to reduce the number of units required for graduation. (p. 4)
  5. the Department consider establishing mandatory advising for the Civil Engineering program at the undergraduate level. (p. 5)
  6. the Department consider setting up an e-mail list to inform students of activities, deadlines, meetings with advisors, etc.; the Department could require that all students obtain and use a Saclink account. (p. 6)
  7. the Department consider setting up an elected CE Department Faculty Advisory Committee to help improve communications with the Dean and other departments in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. (p. 6)
  8. the Department set up an elected CE Department Faculty Advisory Committee to consider issues of student recruitment and retention in the program and implement necessary measures to improve student recruitment at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. (p. 7)
  9. the CE Department consider opening some or all 200-level courses to qualified undergraduate students. (p. 11)
  10. the CE Department consider again whether the graduate program could be strengthened by a common core requirement. (p. 11)
  11. the CE Department consider offering some of the undergraduate electives in the evenings so the graduate students can enroll in these courses. (P. 11)
  12. the CE Department explore YRO programs and offer 200-level electives during the summer months for graduate student enrollment. (p. 11)
  13. the CE Department conduct an assessment of need in various sub-areas in the graduate program and evaluate the graduate curricula in light of the need. (p. 11)
  14. the CM Program faculty consider engaging in a continuous curriculum design process to accommodate expanding requirements of the profession (p. 12)

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE DEAN OF COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

It is recommended that

  1. the Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) appoint a College-level committee to engage in a dialogue with the CSUS General Education (GE) committee to investigate reduction in the GE units for CE majors and CM majors. (p. 5)
  2. the Dean of the College of ECS consider ensuring Engr 150 is offered (as an option for English 20) through the College. (p. 5)
  3. the Dean of the College of ECS consider providing a common room for students in the CE department. (p. 6)
  4. the Dean of the College of ECS consider establishing an "Alumni Day" when the alumni could visit the department to talk to the undergraduate students to help improve graduate studies enrollment. (p. 7)
  5. the Dean of the College of ECS consider increasing the number of computer support staff in the college to support both the CE and CM programs. (p. 15)
  6. the Dean of the College of ECS consider re-evaluating the way the College allocates instructional funds to the CE department. (p. 16)
  7. the Dean of the College of ECS consider increased assigned time for the CM program coordinator to help meet the program demands and challenges. (P. 16)

RECOMMENDATION TO THE CSUS FOUNDATION

It is recommended that the CSUS Foundation and the Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Programs develop a plan for overhead cost sharing formula to encourage expanded faculty involvement in on-campus funded projects. (p. 16)

RECOMMENDATION TO THE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH AND GRADUATE STUDIES

It is recommended that the CSUS Foundation and the Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Programs develop a plan for overhead cost sharing formula to encourage expanded faculty involvement in on-campus funded projects. (p. 16)

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE PROVOST & VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

It is recommended that

  1. The CM coordinator, the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and the CE department review the CM program to reduce the number of units required for graduation. (p. 3)
  2. the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and the CE department faculty review the undergraduate programs in CE with the intent to reduce the number of units required for graduation. (p. 4)
  3. the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs consider approving a PhD tenure- track appointment in the area of CM. (p. 12)

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACADEMIC SENATE ACTION

It is recommended that

  1. the Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering be approved for six years or until the next program review.
  2. the Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management be approved for six years or until the next program review.
  3. the Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering be approved for six years or until the next program review.
