JOB DESCRIPTION
MPP position: Director of General Education (12-month, full-time
appointment)
Rationale: In order to provide the level of oversight, coherence and
prominence that the General Education Program and graduation requirements
initiatives require, the General Education Impact Study Workgroup proposes the appointment of an administrator whose ultimate responsibility would
be to encourage and ensure the excellence and prominence of the CSUS General
Education Program. This administrator would report to the Vice President of
Academic Affairs.
The Director is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and
implementation of the General Education and Graduation Requirement policies and
processes.
- Provides students, faculty, departments, and colleges with information on
the GE program.
- Acts as resource for colleges, departments and individuals interested in
developing courses for General Education
- Coordinates course offerings and scheduling
- Responsible for the implementation of CSUS Graduation Writing Assessment
Requirement (GWAR) policies and procedures, in collaboration with the
Writing Programs Coordinator
The Director assists the Office of Academic Affairs in coordinating the
University's General Education Program and graduation requirement policies.
- Meets regularly with the Vice President or his/her designee to facilitate
improvement in the General Education Program and to monitor program
implementation activities.
- Prepares general and focused reports for the Office of Academic Affairs,
Deans, and Department Chairs on General Education course offerings (e.g.
emerging needs, ongoing areas of high demand). Assists in development of
appropriate courses
The Director is responsible for the development, organization, and
oversight of assessment strategies for the General Education Program and
graduation requirements. The Director is responsible for keeping the campus
community informed of the requirements for and results of General Education
assessment.
- Works in collaboration with the Faculty Coordinator for Assessment, the
Writing Committee, the Writing Program Coordinator, and the GEP/GRC and
General Education subcommittees
- Prepares appropriate reports
- Works in collaboration with the Offices of Academic Advising, Evaluations,
and other University offices and programs to ensure that accurate
information about the General Education Program and graduation requirements
is communicated to incoming and continuing students to ensure effective
implementation of university policies
The Director serves as the Office of Academic Affairs liaison to the
University General Education Policies/Graduation Requirements Committee.
- Acts as a resource for the Committee and works collaboratively with the
Chair in planning the Committee's agenda and activities
- In consultation with the GEP/GRC, interprets CSUS General Education and
Graduation Requirement policies for faculty and students
The Director oversees and facilitates the efforts of the General Education
Course Review Subcommittee.
- Acts as a resource for the Subcommittee's activities and works
collaboratively with the Chair in planning the Subcommittee's work.
- Acts as a liaison between the Subcommittee and CSUS faculty, departments
and colleges proposing new General Education courses and/or undergoing
course review.
- Acts as a liaison between the Subcommittee and the campus articulation
officer
The Director will oversee University-level educational initiatives and
programs related to General Education (e.g. Freshman Seminar, the Learning
Community Program)
The Director acts on student petitions for General Education course
substitutions.
The Director is responsible for preparing and updating the General
Education and Graduation Requirements Information in all university
publications.
The Director will explore new and innovative approaches to General
Education.
