SECOND READING

FS 02-69/FPC, Ex. SCHOLARSHIP THEME IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN

FS 02-75/Ex. UNIVERSITY ARTP DOCUMENT, AMEND SECTIONS 6.04.B.1, 6.04.C.2 AND 6.06.B.1

Background:  In April 2002, the Faculty Senate passed FS 02-21, which amended the University ARTP document, allowing probationary faculty members the right to decline without prejudice to serve on hiring committees.  The President, in a memo to the Faculty Senate of September 4, 2002, asked that the Senate reconsider this language.  The matter was referred to the University ARTP Committee for debate and consideration.  William Dillon, Presiding Member, reported the University ARTP Committee's findings in his memo of October 17, 2002 (Attachment C).  [This item is in Adobe (.pdf) format.  You must have version 5.0 to successfully access these files.  Go to: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html to download the latest version.]

The Faculty Senate recommends amending Sections 6.04.B.1, 6.04.C.2 and 6.06.B.1 as shown in the October 31, 2002 Faculty Senate Agenda Attachment C.

2000 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM REVIEW TEAM - RECOMMENDATION 6

Background:  In December 2001 the GE Program Review Team completed its report and sent fourteen (14) recommendations to the Faculty Senate for consideration and action. Last spring the Senate considered and approved nine (9) of the fourteen (14) recommendations. At that time the Senate established a General Education Impact Study Workgroup and referred the remaining five (5) recommendations them. The membership and structure of this Workgroup was recommended by the GE Review Team. The members are as follows:

GE Review Team Representatives:

John Henry (Economics/SSIS)
Ruth Ballard (Biological Sciences/NSM)

GEP/GRC Chair:

Jackie Donath (Humanities & Religious Studies /A&L)

GE Director:

Greg Wheeler (Academic Affairs)

Faculty Coordinator of Assessment:

Linda Buckley (Academic Affairs)

At-large Members:

Ann Haffer (Nursing/HHS)
Dick Kornweibel (History/A&L)
Marjorie Gelus (Foreign Languages/A&L)
Amy Heckathorn (English/A&L, Writing & Reading      Subcommittee Chair)
Student: (to be appointed by ASI)
Chair: Bob Buckley (Faculty Senate Chair)

The Workgroup's charge was to identify the issues associated with each of these recommendations and to bring the recommendations and their findings to the Senate for consideration and action. The following schedule identifies the meeting dates when each of recommendations will come to the Senate for FIRST and SECOND READINGS.

November 7th: SECOND READING: Recommendations 6.
November 14th: (LIVINGSTON LECTURE CONVOCATION, no Senate meeting.)
November 21st: SECOND READING: Recommendations 4, 3, 5 and 13
November 28th: Thanksgiving

Recommendation 6 deals with two of our "graduation requirements" and appears on the agenda as two separate motions. The first is associated with the second semester writing requirement and the second with the foreign language requirement.

SECOND-SEMESTER WRITING REQUIREMENT, 2000 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS

FS 02-67A The Faculty Senate recommends that the current 3-unit second semester writing graduation requirement be absorbed into the General Education Program.

If Motion FS 02-67A is not approved, no further action is recommended.

If approved, Motion FS 02-67B is to be considered:

FS 02-67B The Faculty Senate recommends that the current 3-unit second semester writing graduation requirement be dropped and the curriculum requirements for the second semester writing requirement be integrated into the critical thinking course curriculum requirements for Area A3 of the General Education Program.

This "combined course" requirement for Area A3 would be met by the following:

  1. Second semester writing courses which integrate critical thinking requirements

  2. Critical thinking courses which integrate second semester writing requirements

  3. New courses which include both second semester writing requirements and critical thinking requirements

If Motion FS 02-67B is not approved, Motion FS 02-67C is to be considered:

FS 02-67C The Faculty Senate recommends that the 3-unit second semester writing graduation requirement be added to Area A of the GE Program thereby increasing Area A by 3 units.

If Motion FS 02-67C is not approved, the second semester writing graduation requirement would be eliminated entirely from the GE Program.

The analysis of issues prepared by the General Education Impact Study Workgroup can be found in the October 17, 2002 Faculty Senate Agenda Attachment C.

FS 02-68/A, B, & C, Ex.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT, 2000 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS

FS 02-68A The Faculty Senate recommends that the foreign language requirement be absorbed into the General Education Program.

If Motion FS 02-68A is not approved, no further action is recommended.

If approved, Motion FS 02-68B is to be considered:

FS 02-68B The Faculty Senate recommends that the foreign language requirement be added as a new Area C5 (Foreign Language) to the GE Program.

If Motion FS 02-68B is not approved, the foreign language requirement is eliminated and foreign language courses included into Area C as electives, and the following Motion FS 02-68C is to be considered:

FS 02-68C The Faculty Senate recommends that the foreign language courses included in Area C as electives be at the intermediate level or above and include a significant cultural component.

NOTE. The GE Review Team was evenly divided on whether to merely add the foreign language graduation requirement to the GE Program OR to add foreign languages courses to the GE Program as electives and eliminate the foreign language graduation requirement. Consequently the Team made no recommendation.

The analysis of issues prepared by the General Education Impact Study Workgroup can be found in the October 17, 2002 Faculty Senate Agenda Attachment D.
