FACULTY SENATE

MEMORANDUM

Date: August 1, 2002
To: Senate Executive Committee
From: William A. Dillon
Presiding Member
University ARTP Committee
Subj: Amendment of UARTP document to reflect new contract language about probationary participation in hiring

The University ARTP Committee, acting by telephone poll, recommends amendment of the University ARTP document to reflect the President's decision, pursuant to Section 12.22a of the M.O.U., to permit probationary faculty to participate without restriction in the hiring of probationary faculty if a department requests it. This decision requires some alteration of the language bearing on probationary participation adopted by the Senate last Spring. The recommended alterations are attached.

Because the principle of participation without restriction embodied in M.O.U. 12.22.a has already been accepted by the President in the exercise of his discretion under that section, the only issue before the Senate is the one of language expressing that principle in the document.

The Committee hopes that Executive Committee will act finally for the Senate on this recommendation and refer the matter to the Senate as an information item so that the new language about probationary participation in hiring may be included in the latest printing of the document to be undertaken on August 15 by Faculty Affairs.

The Committee requests that its Chair be invited to the meeting at which these recommended changes will be discussed and acted on.
