FS 02-69A, Flr. AMEND FS 02-69, SCHOLARSHIP THEME IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN

The Faculty Senate recommends amending FS 02-69, by adding the following:

Excellent s Scholarship Scholarly and creative achievement is multifaceted and broadly defined. It includes the traditional discovery of knowledge and integration of this knowledge across disciplines. As well, s Scholars display the capacity to synthesize and look for new relationships, new patterns of meaning, new ways of knowing and they embrace the challenge of applying knowledge to the problems of society. They Most importantly In addition, scholars acknowledge that excellent teaching requires substantive scholarship inquiry not only  into one's own discipline but also into the art and science of teaching fosters teaching excellence.

FS 02-69/FPC, Ex. SCHOLARSHIP THEME IN THE STRATEGIC PLAN

The Faculty Senate endorses the Scholarship Theme in the Strategic Plan as amended and recommends that it be forwarded to the Council on University Planning (October 17, 2002 Faculty Senate Agenda Attachment E).

Carried unanimously.

*FS 02-75/Ex. UNIVERSITY ARTP DOCUMENT, AMEND SECTIONS 6.04.B.1, 6.04.C.2 AND 6.06.B.1

Background:  In April 2002, the Faculty Senate passed FS 02-21, which amended the University ARTP document, allowing probationary faculty members the right to decline without prejudice to serve on hiring committees.  The President, in a memo to the Faculty Senate of September 4, 2002, asked that the Senate reconsider this language.  The matter was referred to the University ARTP Committee for debate and consideration.  William Dillon, Presiding Member, reported the University ARTP Committee's findings in his memo of October 17, 2002 (Attachment C).  [This item is in Adobe (.pdf) format.  You must have version 5.0 to successfully access these files.  Go to: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html to download the latest version.]

The Faculty Senate recommends amending Sections 6.04.B.1, 6.04.C.2 and 6.06.B.1 as shown in the October 31, 2002 Faculty Senate Agenda Attachment C.

Carried unanimously, with a request to the Dean of Faculty and Staff Affairs to inform every department or equivalent unit and every probationary faculty member that departments or equivalent units may, if they wish, include language in their documents governing appointments that informs probationers that they may decline to serve on hiring committees.

FS 02-67A/Ex.

SECOND-SEMESTER WRITING REQUIREMENT, 2000 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS 

FS 02-67A The Faculty Senate recommends that the current 3-unit second semester writing graduation requirement be absorbed into the General Education Program.

If Motion FS 02-67A is not approved, no further action is recommended. 

Defeated.  (hand vote:  Yes = 17; No = 26)

FS 02-68A,Ex.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT, 2000 GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS 

FS 02-68A The Faculty Senate recommends that the foreign language requirement be absorbed into the General Education Program.

If Motion FS 02-68A is not approved, no further action is recommended. 

Defeated.  (hand vote:  Yes = 14; No = 25)
