M.A. in Economics

Community Health Education and Occupational Health and Safety concentration areas in Kinesiology and Health Science

Description of changes:

Justification:

Major requirements in Criminal Justice

This change creates the status of pre major and pre minor and restricts designated upper division courses to Criminal Justice majors and those students with instructor permission. This change also provides for a Criminal Justice assessment examination and writing sample.

M.S. in Criminal Justice

This change in our admission requirements was approved unanimously by the faculty of the Criminal Justice Division. This proposal involves changing the standards for admission to the MS in Criminal Justice. Specifically, the proposal provides for the replacement of the 2.8 GPA in the last attempted sixty units to a 3.0 GPA. The 3.0 GPA requirement for the undergraduate major remains the same. Secondly, this change proposes the addition of a requirement that applicants to the MS in Criminal Justice attain a score of 4 or better on the Graduate Records Examination’s (GRE) Analytical Writing Section of the test.

M.A. in Counseling Psychology Concentration

This Substantive Program Change proposal clarifies the required courses for the Psychology MA, Counseling Psychology Concentration program, streamlines the curriculum from a programmatic and units perspective, and maintains compliance with new and existing Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) requirements for program certification. The 17 program changes include one new course proposal and several modifications and deletions of existing courses. These course level changes are justified largely because they allow us to offer all BBS required courses while still remaining within the 60 unit maximum required by the University. They are programmatically justified because they continue to reflect the breadth and depth of knowledge associated with the field of Counseling Psychology. Examples of course level changes include the addition of a graduate level psychopharmacology course and the combining of couples counseling, spousal/partner abuse, and human sexuality topics into a single three unit course. We also propose to eliminate the catalog section ‘Additional Courses for MFT License’ and incorporate the topics therein into the catalog section ‘Required Courses’. This change is justified by the need to bring degree program requirements and BBS requirements into complete alignment.

The new minor will enable the holder of a valid teaching credential to add physical education to his or her credential as a supplementary authorization in compliance with the state CTC standards.

Deletion of the Elementary Teaching Minor Option in Kinesiology and Health Science

The current elementary minor is not in compliance with the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing accreditation guidelines and is to be replaced with the Supplementary Authorization in Physical Education-Minor Option. The new minor will enable the holder of a valid teaching credential to add physical education to his or her credential as a supplementary authorization in compliance with the state CTC standards.

New Supplementary Authorization in Physical Education Minor, Kinesiology and Health Science

The holder of a valid teaching credential may have physical education added to his or her credential as a supplementary authorization by completing this minor. The student is asked to complete a minimum of 18 semester units with a grade of “C” or higher. The Commission of Teacher Credentialing requires that the subject matter fulfills the following areas: team sports and games; fundamental and creative movement skills; human movement, motor development, and/or motor learning; and individual, dual, non traditional and global sports and games.
