ARGUMENTS IN FAVOR: There were two principal arguments in favor of the changes in the policy proposed above.

• First, now that students no longer receive written notification of their first semester WU grades (because grades are no longer mailed out) students often don’t become aware of the policy in time to act.
• Second, in light of the first point above, the six-month deadline seems arbitrary and has made it difficult for counselors in Academic Advising to justify to students.
• Third, the changes above—no deadline to petition with an automatic drop of first semester WUs at time of graduation—bring the policy in line with current university practice regarding Repeat Grade Replacement Petition.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST: The principal argument against the proposed change was that, now that students no longer receive written notification of their receipt of a WU grade and the policies governing it, the educational function originally tied to allowing the student to petition to delete no longer exists. Registrar Anita Hall has indicated, however, that plans are currently underway to begin notifying students by email whenever they receive a WU and inform them of the petition policy.
