PROGRAM CHANGE PROPOSALS

Art Department

The Art Department has had a minimum grade of “C-” for all courses required for the undergraduate major in Studio Art (from the CSUS Catalog: “Courses applied to the major must be completed with a grade of ‘C-’ or higher”). There has been no minimum grade in any of the courses applied towards the Department’s three minors. The Art faculty have agreed to: (1) raise the minimum grade in courses required for the major from “C-” to “C”; (2) require a minimum grade of “C” in all courses used towards the minors in Art Education, Art History, and Art Studio. Note: The new Art History concentration already requires a minimum grade of “C” in all courses applied towards the concentration.

Music

The Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies is a new concentration for the Department of Music. This request refines and clarifies the numbering and sequencing of coursework within the concentration.

This proposal asks to renumber two upper division courses, Jazz Theory and Improvisation I and II, to lower division numbers as we expect these courses to be taken during the sophomore year and to articulate with similar courses at the community colleges.

Kinesiology and Health Science – Physical Education Concentration

The proposed program is designed to provide two options with in the concentration that are available to all students. First, the Blended Credential Concentration provides students with the coursework for both subject matter content and pedagogy for teaching physical education at the K-12 level. Students who choose this option will graduate with the coursework necessary for a Single Subject Credential in Physical Education, except for the student teaching requirement and seminar. Second, the General Physical Education Concentration meets the standards for subject matter preparation in physical education and will allow students to pursue a Single Subject Credential in Physical Education at other institutions or alternative careers.

The proposed program reflects significant changes in the preparation of single subject credential candidates mandated by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and the California Legislature. In order to comply with a 135 unit blended program mandate (with 120 for graduation) the proposed program was designed to fall within this unit mandate.

The program proposal was designed in consultation with and guidance from College of Education faculty. Further, internal assessment of student and community needs, the CSU Kinesiology standards and competencies, and CCTC subject matter standards were used extensively and provided guidance in the development of the program proposal.
