CHARGE TO UNIVERSITY WRITING & READING SUBCOMMITTEE
Based on the discussion in the Writing Requirements break-out session at the
2005 Faculty Senate Retreat, the Senate Executive Committee requests the
University Writing and Reading Subcommittee:
- To examine the desirability of developing a comprehensive undergraduate
writing policy for students at the California State University, Sacramento;
and
- As part of its examination, to consider the numerous recommendations that
came out of the Writing Requirements breakout session and whether they should
be incorporated into any comprehensive writing policy. These recommendations
include:
- Stricter sequencing of writing requirements
- Registration tracks for writing requirements (i.e., allowing students to
pre-register at the time of admission for writing courses multiple semesters
in advance)
- Alternate ways of offering the WPE, such as in electronic (word
processing) format as well as the hand-written;
- Ways of infusing the writing requirement more broadly across the
curriculum rather than confining it to specific courses & the WPE;
- To also consider, as part of its examination, recommendations on this
topic made by the General Education & Graduation Requirements Committee; and
- To report on its findings and recommendations to the Faculty Senate by
March 2006.
