Graduate education and continuing education are essential components of the mission of the California State University.

6a. The CSU will provide increased access to graduate education and continuing education, especially in those programs central to the lifelong opportunity of our students, and to the continued health of California's communities and economy. ...such as teaching and nursing, and newer fields such as biotechnology and multimedia. ...significant expansion of professional and other programs in areas of high need, financed atleastpartly through program reductions in other areas.
  • Administrative reorganization underway to facilitate this goal.
  • Need new efforts to recognize societal need for lifelong learning.
  • RCE and University must offer graduate programs and coursework off campus and through distributed education.
  • Key to new and strengthened programs are reductions in some areas.
  •     Teacher preparation must be a high priority.
    6b. ...require a significant integration of programs in both the state-supported and fee-supported modes; the specifics of a more integrated program need to be developed, including the proper institutional and financial relationships.       
    6c. The expansion of CSU post-baccalaureate programs sill require a new system of financing those programs.      Possible revenue source.
    6d. The expansion of opportunity in these areas requires significant increases in financial aid for graduate, credential, and continuing education students.
  • Students need for computers are not covered under financial aid.

    6e. The expansion of opportunity in these areas will require new partnerships with community and business.
  • Numerous campus specific examples, e.g. USGS, Intel, Schools.
  •     Work on guiding, generic principles to enhance or remove barriers.
    6f. The CSU should explore the feasibility of a "California State University Alumni Passport," which would offer continuing education courses at reduced fees, and other means of expanding access to lifelong learning for CSU graduates.
