My name is Kadina Koonce and I am a Geography major and Geology minor with a concentration in Human Geography & Metropolitan Area Planning. I am from a small suburban town and knew I wanted to experience life in a bigger city. Sacramento was the only school in northern California that I knew would be affordable, and give me the experience I was looking for. I never toured Sacramento State, but saw pictures of campus and knew this was going to be it for me – especially when I found out the Geology department has ties to the USGS. Living on campus, being part of the Cooper-Woodson program, my on-campus job, and studying abroad have had the biggest impact on my experience here at Sacramento State. Living in the Residence Halls gave me the opportunity to come out of my shell, branch out, and hold three different leadership positions. Through Cooper-Woodson my mentor has supported me like a mother away from home and gave me an opportunity to become a Student Ambassador tour guide. As a Student Ambassador I am exposed to many different campus resources, people, and opportunities, which has given me purpose. Sacramento State made a difference in my life and I want to do the same for others. During my senior year I worked up the courage to study abroad. I never imagined studying abroad was possible. I thought it was too expensive and unachievable, but when I did it it changed my whole perspective. I have so many hopes and dreams and I know now that nothing can stop me.Senior
College is what you make it. Get involved with what you love, and don't let your doubts get in the way. Join a club. Run for a leadership office. Visit the Capitol. Jump in the river. Travel. Seek help. Make memories, but most of all: Be determined.
