Do you have foreign credit? Please read through the information on this page carefully to help ensure a successful start here at Sacramento State.

Are you an International or Domestic Applicant?

International applicants: Students who are or will be attending Sacramento State on an F-1 or J-1 student visa.

Domestic students with foreign coursework: U.S. citizens who have attended college abroad or non-U.S. citizens with foreign coursework who are not attending Sacramento State on an F-1 or J-1 student visa.

Foreign Institution Accreditation & WES Evaluations

Sacramento State will accept coursework from internationally accredited institutions of higher education from all countries.

Sacramento State will only accept evaluations of foreign course work from World Education Services (WES). Applicants are not required to obtain a WES evaluation. Applicants may elect to have their foreign coursework evaluated by the International Programs and Global Engagement (IPGE) office. Please be aware official evaluations of foreign credit by IPGE may take up to three weeks to process. Applicants who elect to have an evaluation performed by WES, do so at their own expense.

Required Documents for Students with Foreign Credit

International applicants (students who are or will be attending Sacramento State on an F-1 or J-1 student visa) will need to submit official transcripts with a certified translation* directly to Sacramento State’s office of International Programs and Global Engagement (IPGE) at the following address:

*If you are unable to send official transcripts because they are your only copy, attested and notarized copies will be accepted. We will require you to present official documents upon an offer of admission when you arrive for orientation.

Domestic applicants with foreign coursework will need to submit all official transcripts to Admissions & Outreach after applying to the university. Please visit I Have Applied for more information on submitting official transcripts.

Transfer Credit Evaluation of Foreign Credit

General Transfer Credit Information from Foreign Institutions:

  • Sacramento State will accept a maximum of 90 semester units from internationally accredited 4-year foreign institutions and a maximum of 70 semester units from internationally accredited 2-year foreign institutions.

  • Golden Four” General Education (GE) Admission Requirements:
    • Sacramento State will only accept GE Area A1 (Oral Communication) courses from countries where English is a native language (i.e. Canada, UK, Australia, etc.).
    • Sacramento State will only accept GE Area A2 (Written Communication), and Area A3 (Critical Thinking) English composition courses from countries where English is a native language (i.e. Canada, UK, Australia, etc.).
    • Sacramento State may accept other GE Area A3 (Critical Thinking) courses (i.e. a Philosophy Logic course) from non-English speaking countries – a course syllabus is required for evaluation.
    • Sacramento State may accept GE Area B4 (Quantitative Reasoning) courses from any country – a course syllabus is required for evaluation.

  • Sacramento State will NOT accept any English courses from non-English speaking countries.

  • Foreign transcript GPA’s will be calculated for admission purposes, but will be posted to the student record as neutral credit (CR) and will not affect cumulative GPA.

  • Foreign coursework may be applied to Sacramento State’s General Education pattern. Students must provide a course description or a syllabus for all courses they would like to apply to the GE pattern.

  • Foreign coursework may be applied to Sacramento State’s major requirements. Students should submit a Transfer Course Equivalency Form or Major/Minor Course Substitutions and Waivers Form with a course syllabus attached to the appropriate academic department.

Foreign Credit Applicant Advising

  • All prospective applicants with foreign credit should begin their advising at Sacramento State’s office of International Programs and Global Engagement (IPGE). Prospective students may walk-in during the following hours without an appointment:

    Tuesdays: 3pm-5pm
    Wednesdays: 9am-11am
    Thursday: 12pm-2pm

    IPGE Location: Library 1001 (Directly across the main entrance of the Library and next to the Grumpy Mule coffee shop)

    If you plan on visiting the IPGE office to speak to an Admissions Counselor outside of the hours listed above, you must make an appointment before arriving. Appointments may be made by sending an email to the following email address: intlinfo@csus.edu.

    Please bring official documents, and any additional course information such as a syllabus, to your advising session.

  • Prospective domestic students with foreign credit should bring a copy of their Evaluation of Foreign Coursework Form from their IPGE walk-in or scheduled appointment to Admissions & Outreach for further admissions advising prior to submitting an application for admission.
