by Houston Advanced Research Center
Dr. Weeks is an environmental anthropologist
with the Houston Advanced Research Center’s Social and Policy Analysis
Group. Her work as an applied anthropologist focuses on the public
acceptance of scientific information, technical innovation and new
regulations as they relate to environmental sustainability and its various
social impacts. A secondary area of research investigates the way in which
scientific information and personal ethics combine in environmental
disputes. Recent work has examined issues related to natural resource
management, rural development, the environmental movement, protected areas
and fisheries. Weeks has worked to incorporate local knowledge into
environmental management through participatory research and collaborative
decision-making. She has served on two National Academy of Science Panels
related to her work and has recently completed terms on the Gulf of Mexico
Fisheries Management Council’s Social and Economic Panel. She holds a
Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Rice University and has conducted
fieldwork in the Philippines, India, and the US. She has been working in the area
of participatory development and conservation for 15 years.
