Student Paper Awards Association of Pacific Coast Geographers
72nd Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA
Sept. 30 – Oct. 3, 2009Here is an excellent opportunity for students who would like the experience of presenting their research at a professional, yet safe and friendly, meeting. Students benefit from the challenge of presenting to a diverse audience and receiving expert feedback. Papers by students are a significant portion of the presentations at our annual meeting. To encourage this activity, and to recognize and reward meritorious student scholarship, the APCG will offer 6 paper awards and 1 poster award at the 2009 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. The awards to the student presenters are as follows:
1) Tom McKnight and Joan Clemens Award for an Outstanding Student Paper, $250
2) President’s Award for Outstanding Paper by a Ph.D. Student, $150
3) President’s Award for Outstanding Paper by a Master’s Student, $150
4) President’s Award for Outstanding Paper by an Undergraduate Student, $150
5) Harry and Shirley Bailey Award for Outstanding Paper in Physical Geography, $150
6) Committee Award for Regional Geography, $150
7) President’s Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation, $150The Awards are open to undergraduate and graduate students who are APCG members. Papers may be co-authored if all authors are students. The paper or poster must be presented at the annual meeting. Evaluation is made by the APCG Awards Committee based on the extended abstract and the presentation. Student presenters may also apply for a travel grant of $150.
To enter the student paper or poster competition, students must complete the following steps:
1) Submit the regular short abstract (200 words max) to the 2009 conference coordinator in San Diego as outlined in the Call for Papers/Abstracts for the 2009 annual meeting. For details, check the Conferences link on the APCG web-site at http://www.csus.edu/apcg/conferences.htm.2) Submit an extended abstract (1,250 words max) to Jim Keese, APCG Awards Committee, by September 11, 2009. Send extended abstracts (attached as an MS Word file) to jkeese@calpoly.edu. See the link at the bottom of this page for the extended abstract format.
3) Complete a Student Paper and Poster Competition Application Form and send it to Jim Keese along with the extended abstract.
4) Be a member of the APCG and register for the conference.

is September 11, 2009.Travel Grants for Students Many students would love to present at the APCG but can’t afford to go. To encourage student participation, the APCG will offer travel grants to students who present papers or posters at the annual meeting. Grants are $150 each ($50 for students from the San Diego area). Recipients will be drawn from a random lottery of applicants up to a maximum of $3,000. To be eligible for a travel grant to the annual meeting, a student must be an APCG member and must present a paper or poster at the annual meeting. You do not need to be entered into the paper/poster competition to be eligible for a travel grant. Presenters will be notified of their grant by September 14, and will be awarded their grant checks at the annual banquet (or by mail afterward). Travel grant applications must be received by the awards committee chair, Jim Keese, jkeese@calpoly.edu, by September 11, 2009.
Deadline for submission of the travel grant applications is September 11, 2009.
