Respondus

Respondus is a third-party application from Respondus, Inc., that you can use to create quizzes for Canvas or for print. You may also import existing questions from a text file, Microsoft Word, and from the Publishers Test Bank. Respondus is available to all Sac State faculty and staff, for university or personally-owned computers. Note: This is a Windows-only software application.

Key Features

  • Create and Edit: Respondus files to use for quiz/exam creation and publishing to a Canvas course
  • Test Bank Network: connect to test banks from many publisher textbooks (after a registration process) that you can use to easily create exams.
  • Import Questions: created in Word/Text files to edit in Respondus and publish to a Canvas Course(s).
  • Question Groups and Settings: establish settings to present a random selection of quiz questions for each exam taken by students. Also quiz settings for when to release exam, number of attempts and feedback can be set up in Respondus before publishing to a Canvas course.
  • Publish: exams created or imported into Respondus to a single course or a batch of courses in Canvas.
  • Print Exams: to a PDF, Word or paper format and choose to include answer key.

Who Can Use Respondus?

Faculty and staff that are affiliated with Sac State and will utilize this resource for campus purposes, can download Respondus from the Software for University Owned Device or Software for Personally Owned Device  webpages.

Our license allows you to install a copy of the Respondus software on a personal computer. However, you are not permitted to provide the Respondus software or the password information to anyone who is not affiliated with our institution. Such an action is a violation of our licensing agreement with Respondus. If a Sac State colleague would like a copy of the software, refer them to the Software for Personally Owned Device webpage.

Access and Download Respondus

Personally Owned Devices

You can install a copy of the Respondus software to a personal computer. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Software for Personally Owned Device webpage.
  2. Locate Respondus 4.0 Campus-Wide from the table (programs listed by Software Title).
  3. From the “Order” column to the right, click the link Install Respondus 4.0 Campus-Wide link.
  4. At the Office 365 prompt enter your saclink email address and select Next.
  5. Enter your Saclink Username and Password and select Login.
  6. Save the Zip file, Respondus_Installation.zip, to your computer (select a location that is easy to find such as your Desktop or Downloads).
  7. Open the Respondus_Installation.zip file you downloaded. It contains three files:
    • Respondus4Campus.exe - the installation file.
    • Respondus New Installation Instructions.docx - instructions and license information.
    • Respondus License Information.docx - for faculty renewing the software
  8. Review the Respondus License Information & Installation Instructions before installing the Respondus software.
  9. Open the Respondus4Campus.exe file and install the software.
  10. Begin using Respondus. 

University Owned Devices

Since you may need admin access to install applications and programs to a work computer, please submit a Service Request to install Respondus to a work desktop or laptop computer.

  1. Navigate to the Software for University Owned Device webpage.
  2. Locate Respondus 4.0 Campus-Wide from the list of software and click the Request Respondus 4.0 Campus-Wide link.
  3. Complete the Service Ticket. Enter a description for your request (i.e. Installation of Respondus software to work computer).
  4. Enter your contact information - saclink username, email and phone.
  5. Click Submit.
