ABOUT ATCS
What does ATCS stand for?
ATCS stands for Academic Technology and Creative Services, a division of Academic Affairs.
Where is ATCS located?
The main office is in ARC 3005 (Academic Information Resources Center), with auxiliary offices for some of the Creative Services Staff located in Library South Lower Level Rooms 15, 19 and 21. See the ATCS contact list for a complete listing of ATCS staff and locations.
What kinds of services are available to help in my teaching?
There are many, including: instructional design, production of graphics, photos, video, interactive learning modules and more, to support your teaching applications for regular instructional use, in smart classrooms, using WebCT, or via distance education.
Where can I see examples of ATCS work?
Check out our portfolio!
Additional examples may also be found at ATCS Tools.
Will ATCS services cost me or my department any money?
The personnel and facilities offered by ATCS are, in most cases, free of charge for instructionally related projects. The sponsoring Program Center is responsible for any out-of-pocket expenses (e.g. copyright clearance, talent, music rights, travel, supplies and materials and non-general fund personnel). Non-instructional projects including promotional materials and grant projects are undertaken on a time and materials chargeback basis.
How do I know who is best to help with my project?
See the list of professional staff at www.csus.edu/atcs or contact ATCS Director Dr. Jean-Pierre Bayard 278-5754 bayardj@csus.edu
What if I just want advice, or a preliminary discussion of ideas – who do I contact?
If you have no specific plans and are looking for some general guidance on the potential use of technology in your teaching, contact Dr. Jean-Pierre Bayard, Director of ATCS by phone (278-5754 or email: bayardj@csus.edu).
Do I have to get advance approval from my department or from an ATCS manager before I talk directly to an ATCS support staff?
No. If you know the staff professional with whom you wish to work, you may contact them directly. In general, new projects are best explored with Dr. Bayard or the manager of each unit (Michaeline Veden for graphic, photo, multimedia or video-related projects, Raymond Pina for WebCT, iMeet, training or other software applications).
CONSULTATION AND TRAINING
Are there workshops or training classes for faculty?
Yes. There are many training sessions throughout the year, including summer and the mid-winter intersession. See details at: http://www.csus.edu/uccs/training/
Training documents are also available at: http://www.csus.edu/uccs/documents/
Can I stop by any day and time and meet with a consultant?
Drop-ins are always welcome, but it is best to make an appointment with the consultant of your choice to guarantee a focused and uninterrupted block of time to maximize progress on your project. On Fridays (1-4pm) during the semester and on Thursdays (1-4pm) during the intersession and summer, ATCS professionals are available for consultation in the Faculty and Staff Resource Center located in ARC 3012
I’ve heard about the Faculty & Staff Resource Center. What is it; where is it, and can anyone use it?
The FSRC is in Room ARC 3012 and is available for any Sac State Faculty or Staff person. The FSRC is equipped with both PC and Mac workstations, and there are two individual project workrooms for capture and editing of slides and/or media. These two rooms can be reserved in advance when you visit the FSRC. For details on location, hours and more: http://www.csus.edu/uccs/fscenter
DISTANCE and DISTRIBUTED EDUCATION
I just registered for a Distance Education Course – does this mean I never have to come to campus? What about books? Tests?
Sac State has a robust distance education program that uses many technologies. The answers to your questions will depend on what class you signed up for. Check out the Distance Education FAQ for students.
Some classes are on TV. Who decides if a course is offered on TV?
The individual faculty member and their department decide whether or not to offer a class on TV. Dr. Rose Leigh Vines, ATCS Director of Distance and Distributed Education, works with faculty to arrange the distribution method, room scheduling, catalog posting, etc.
Will my TV classes be recorded, archived and available on line?
Most televised classes are seen live on cable TV. Some, by request of the faculty, can be simultaneously streamed to the internet. These courses are archived as streaming video, and are available – with faculty approval – on demand through a WebCT course page. Some courses are requested for streaming only, and are not broadcast on cable TV.
If I am asked to teach from a TV classroom, will someone be available to train me and help me with this new teaching environment?
Yes! DDE has a full staff of trained professionals to help make your television course a success. For more information, contact Dr. Bayard at 278-5754 or bayardj@csus.edu
