What is a journal club?

A journal club is a gathering of faculty and students that meet once a week to discuss a paper from the current literature. The paper is announced (and ideally distributed) the week before. Participants read the paper and come to the meeting ready to discuss the pros and cons of the research. This is an ideal way to find out what is hot in current science. For students it is also a great way to find out who at other institutions is doing interesting stuff that you might consider applying to for graduate school.

Which papers will we look at?

We will focus on papers in the very recent literature in the fields of ecology, evolution, conservation and related fields (e.g., functional morphology, evolutionary ecology, applied ecology). Any participant is welcome to suggest a paper but practice has shown that shorter papers such as those found in Nature, Science and TREE (Trends in Ecology and Evolution) are much more likely to be read by the participants than 30 page monographs.
