A description of the Department of Biological Sciences can be found in our Department Portfolio and here in the Department "Fact Book"
Biology is the study of life in all its wondrous complexity and interactions.
The Sacramento area offers wonderful opportunities for biological sciences. We are close to myriad habitats including the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, the California central valley, and the central California coastline, all within a couple of hours. The campus itself is located on the Lower American River, designated as a National Wild and Scenic River and the most heavily used recreational river in the state. Sacramento is also a growing center for biotechnology with numerous companies located in the immediate area. The State Capitol of California is located in Sacramento and CSUS provides a unique opportunity for students to become involved with various State and Federal agencies through biological internships and part-time employment. A number of public agencies, hospitals, clinics, and private health practices in the Sacramento area provide opportunities for students interested in the health care fields.
Our Department, consisting of 23 full-time faculty along with our dedicated part-timers and staff, strives to increase understanding and appreciation for biology through excellence in teaching and research. We are part of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM).
Housed in two buildings on the CSU campus, namely Humboldt and Sequoia Halls, we teach roughly 950 biological science majors, numerous non-majors and pre-health students, along with 65 Masters level graduate students. We have extensive laboratories, collections and facilities, including fish, herp, bird, mammal, insect, invertebrate and plant collections. The Department has a modern molecular biology facility for use by faculty and students. We are one of seven CSU campuses participating in the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML), located at Moss Landing, California, on Monterey Bay.
The size of our department and program is large enough to offer a diverse range of courses while still maintaining small class sizes, providing extensive opportunities for students to get to know their professors and vice versa.
We are passionate about high-quality teaching and our goal is to maximize each student's potential. The SEE office is particularly instrumental in providing an academic and peer support system for students who face social, economic, and educational barriers to careers in the health professions, science research and science teaching.
We have strong ties to area community colleges. Many of our students start out at area community colleges such as the Los Rios Community Colleges and later transfer into our programs.
The Department is a major participant in Center for STEM Excellence. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
