Dr. Juanita Barrena, is a
Professor of Biological Sciences
at California State University, Sacramento
She was appointed to the faculty in 1975 and has received awards for her excellence in teaching from both students and faculty colleagues. Dr. Barrena earned the B.S. degree in Biological Sciences in 1969 from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY; the M.S. degree in Zoology (Physiology) in 1972 from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa; and the Ph.D. in Zoology (Physiology) in 1975 from Iowa State University. Dr. Barrena also earned the J.D. degree in May, 2001, from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, CA, and was admitted to the California State Bar in December, 2001.
During her tenure at CSUS, Dr. Barrena served as Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences and as Chair of the University’s Faculty Senate. Dr. Barrena co-authored the proposal that established the Science Educational Equity (S.E.E.) Program as an on-going University program, and has served as SEE Director since its inception in 1986. In this capacity, she has been active in securing grants from federal and private agencies to support the program’s efforts to redress inequities in access to higher education and careers in the sciences and health professions. She also currently serves as Lead Project director for the California State University-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (CSU-LSAMP). This project, funded by the National Science Foundation (HRD 0331537), is a state-wide effort program dedicated to increasing the number of students from under-represented minority groups (URM) graduating from campuses of the California State University (CSU) with baccalaureate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics disciplines.
