The general deadline for spring scholarships is April 11, 2008, unless noted otherwise.

Not all scholarships are offered every year.

For scholarship purposes: for an undergraduate, full-time is 12 units, half-time is 6 units; for a graduate student, full-time is 8 units, half-time is 4 units. Units are counted in the FALL (that is when scholarships are "AWARDED" unless specified otherwise)

I. Undergradute Only Student Scholarships

Richard W. Fish Scholarship

Description: The Richard W. Fish Scholarship offers support for students majoring in chemistry and biological sciences who are interested in pursuing pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-veterinary careers or advanced degrees in chemistry.

Amount of Scholarship: $500 (Two awards available)

Eligibility:

Be a Junior or Senior student in the Spring 2006 semester
Have completed at least one semester at CSUS & are currently enrolled in at least 12 units
Have a GPA of 2.5 or above
Majoring in Chemistry or Biological Sciences
Pursuing a pre-medical, pre-dental or pre-veterinary career or advanced degree in chemistry

Sutter Clinical Laboratory Technology Scholarship

Description:

Amount of Scholarship: $1500/Year

Eligibility:

Maintain full-time, senior status in the Department of Biological Sciences
Have a Clinical Laboratory Technology concentration
Maintain a 3.0 GPA
Submit an application by the published deadline, to include copies of transcripts and a statement of scholarly accomplishments
One letter of support from a faculty member who can comment on the student's scholarly potential

The award may be renewed for up to three years.

To establish a strong link between the Sutter Health Scholar and the Sutter Health organization, scholars will, in writing or in person, present progress reports to the Sutter Health Foundation annually.

Hedda and Thomas Smithson Mathematics/Science Scholarship

Description: Open to NSM majors in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy

Amount of Scholarship: $1000

Requirements:

Class Standing/GPA:

Be a junior or senior at the time of award (Fall 2008)
Enrolled in a minimum of 6 units at the time of the award
Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 at the time of the award
Financial need not a requirement

Educational/Work Background:

A list of College (past and present) workshops, seminars, academic achievements, awards and honors
A list of past employers -- describe responsibilities
Resume with above information is acceptable

Letters of Recommendation:

Two letters of recommendation from individuals such as teachers, professors, counselors or employers who can attest to the student's potential for success. At least one letter must be from a college professor. Letters may report the applicant's participation in volunteer work or employment history, notable skills, work habits, integrity, leadership skills or other abilities

Essay:

1-2 page double spaced essay on personal goals and achievements and career objective(s) in mathematics or science. Explain why a scholarship is needed. Include pertinent biographical information.

John and Kathryn von Saltza Memorial Scholarship in Biological Sciences

Description: The scholarship provides $2000 ($1000 per semester) to a student in their last two semesters at CSUS to cover tuition and fees. Preference will be givein to students who have been continuously enrolled at CSUS since their freshman year.

Amount of Scholarship: $2000 ($1000 per semester)

Eligibility:

Be a major in Biological Sciences with two semesters left until graduation
Have completed a minimum of 90 units towards graduation at the end of the semester of application
Enroll in a minimum of 12 units for each of the two semesters of the award
Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 to receive the award for the second semester
Submit letters of recommendation from two faculty members at CSUS
Submit a statement fo purpose of no more than 500 words
Submit official transcripts from all universities

Marda West Scholar and Marda West Scholarships

Description: For undegraduate OR graduate students in Biological Sciences

Amount of Scholarship: Marda West Scholar $5000/year;
Marda West Scholarships $4000/year

Eligibility:

Must be an undergraduate or graduate student in Biological Sciences

Must be enrolled full time in the semester in which the award is used

Must submit a completed application (and four copies) by the published deadline in the spring that contains the following: a cv/resume, copies of all transcripts, a statement of purpose and a completed recommendation form from two individuals who can comment on your scholarly potential

Sacramento Safari Club Scholarships

Jack and Bernice Newell Scholarship

Description: Undergraduate or Graduate student majoring in Biological Conservation

Amount of Scholarship: $1000/yr ($500 per semester)

Eligibility:

Be a declared major in Biological Conservation, or students seeking a degree in a related field of conservation, such as, Natural Resources Management, Forestry, Environmental Studies, Conservation Education, Outdoor Education, or Animal Science

Enrolled in at least half time at time of reward
Evidence of commitment to a career in biological conservation
Junior, Senior or Graduate Student status at time of award
Preference will be given to applicants exhibiting academic excellence over the greatest range of upper division coursework within the discipline
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
Knowledgable in the practice of Wildlife Management

Submit resume, copy of all transcripts and a one page essay about the importance of maintaining a multi-use environment for all people to enjoy

Recipients may acquire scholarship no more than twice.

Paul Snider Scholarship

Kern Chew Scholarship

Description: Undergraduate or Graduate student majoring in Biological Conservation

Albert Delisle Student Research Scholar Program in Biological Sciences

Description: All biology majors are encouraged to apply; preference may be given to students who indicate a particular research interest in plant biology, population genetics and/or gene-based studies

Amount of Award: up to $2500 per year

Funds will be placed in an account that may be used to purchase research supplies, fund travel for research (including travel to meetings), pay conference fees, purchase equipment, or pay for other expenses related to the project.

Eligibility:

Have a minimum 2.50 GPA overall

Preference may be given to students exhibiting academic excellence over the greatest breadth of coursework in the discipline.

Recipients may receive this award no more than twice.

Must be a declared major in Biological Sciences

Albert Delisle Family Scholarship

Description: All biology majors are encouraged to apply; preference may be given to students who indicate a particular interest in plant biology, population genetics and/or gene-based studies

Amount of Scholarship: up to $2000 per year

Eligibility:

Have a minimum 2.50 GPA overall

Preference may be given to students exhibiting academic excellence over the greatest breadth of coursework in the discipline.

Recipients may receive this scholarship no more than twice.

Carl Ludwig Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

Description: This award recognizes a student who embodies Dr. Ludwig's values of academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching.

Amount of Award: $700

Eligibility:

Be a declared major in Biological Sciences at CSUS
Have CSUS Junior, Senior or Classified Graduate standing
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA in all biology coursework
Have a minimum 2.75 GPA overall
Be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units (undergraduates) or 6 units (graduates) in the semester in which the award is used

Submit a completed application by the published deadline that includes: copies of all transcripts; a statement of teaching philosophy and one letter of support from a faculty member who can comment on the applicant's teaching ability and commitment to teaching

The award will be used toward California resident fees and/or tuition

Recipients may acquire this award no more than twice.

JoAnne McDougal Robinson Scholarship in Medical Science

Description: Scholarship to assist and inspire a student wishing to pursue a career in medicine or nursing

Amount of Award: $600

Eligibility:

Minimum GPA of 3.0
Junior, Senior or Graduate Student status
Enrolled in at least 6 units at time of award
Submit a one page statement detailing career goals and experiences that demonstrate committment to attaining goals
Submit application and transcripts by the published deadline

Biological Conservation Scholarship

Description: This scholarship recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in biological conservation.

Amount of Award: $500

Eligibility:

Be a declared major in biological conservation
Evidence of a commitment to a career in biological conservation
Completion of a minimum of 6 units of upper division/graduate CSUS biology coursework
Preference will be given to applicants exhibiting academic excellence over the greatest range of upper division coursework within the discipline
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA in all biology coursework
Have a minimum 2.75 GPA overall

Recipients may acquire this award no more than twice.

Jo-Ann Bulf Memorial Scholarship

Description: Jo-Ann Bulf, Administrative Operations Analyst in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, died of breast cancer in 1999. To honor her memory and wishes, a scholarship has been established in her name.

Amount of Scholarship: $1000

Eligibility:

A senior or Graduate student at the time of the award (Fall 2005)
Have a GPA of 2.75 or above
Currently and will be enrolled in at least 6 units during the semesters in which the award is used
Will be working under the supervision of a faculty advisor in Fall 2005 on a project related to women's health issues, cancer or genetic disorders

Financial need may be considered, but not required.

III. Graduate Student Scholarships

Josephine Van Ess Scholarship

Description: For a Classified Graduate Student in Biological Sciences

Amount of Scholarship: $2000/yr

Eligibility:

Be a classified graduate student in CSUS Biological Science
Have research interest in botany
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
Be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units in the semester in which the award is used
Submit a completed application by the published deadline in the spring that contains copies of all transcripts, a statement of research interest and one letter of support from a faculty member who can comment on the student's research potential.

M.D.F. Udvardy Graduate Student Award

Description: To honor Dr. Udvardy's outstanding contributions to ornithology and biogeography and his wide-ranging curiosity about the natural world. The award shall enhance graduate student research and/or disseminate research findings of ornithology or biogeography from an evolutionary perspective. The award may 1) support the purchase of research equipment or 2) defray costs of travel and attendance at professional meetings where the applicant has a paper accepted for presentation of his/her research findings.

Amount of Scholarship: $500/yr

Eligibility:

Be a classified graduate student in CSUS Biological Sciences
Have advanced to candidacy, or will have advanced to candidacy in the semester in which they apply
Have completed his/her data collection for the MS degree, or at a minimum, one year of data collection for the MS degree

Submit a completed application by the published deadline in the spring that includes:

1. An application, no more than two pages (single spaced, 10 pt. Font, 1 inch margins)
2. Copy of graduate transcripts
3. Proof of advancement to candidacy
4. The application should include proof of acceptance of a paper for presentation at a conference, workshop, symposium, or some other professional forum
5. Title of the research project/paper presentation, and a description of the research project/paper presentation. The description shall include a paragraph of no more than 100 words summarizing the applicant's personal motivation for the research topic and his/her career plans. For application requesting research support, the description should also include a timeline for data collection, a detailed description of the equipment and supplies to be purchased and the motivation for the purchase. The application shall also indicate whether or not they have plans to submit the work for publication, and if so, where
6. No more than one year after receipt of the award, the recipient shall submit to the Department, a summary report (maximum of 1 page) of his/her use of the funds and professional benefit from the award

No student may receive the award more than twice
