Scholarship

John Clevenger, Computer Science and Computer Engineering, gave the keynote address titled "Inside the Computer Science Inside Computer Games" at the Arab and North Africa Eighth Regional Contest/ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest Conference at Kuwait University on Nov. 30. His talk dealt with why games are a serious computer science topic.

Craig Gallet, Economics, had the paper entitled "Putting out Fires: An Examination of the Determinants of State Clean Indoor-Air Laws" accepted for publication in the Southern Economic Journal.

Anna Kruger, Music, was the winner of an international audition that enabled her to assume duties as associate principal violist of the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra.

Barbara Keys, History, presented a paper on "The Soviet Union, Global Culture, and the 1956 Olympic Games" at a conference in Zurich in October and this semester will be teaching at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

Bill Owen, Communication Studies, has a poem in the January issue of Mainichi Daily News, Tokyo.

William A. Dorman, Government emeritus, was quoted in a January story distributed globally by Inter Press Service News Agency on how U.S. television news covered the world during 2005. IPS is headquartered in Rome and is a leading independent news agency specializing in development issues.

Bob Whitford, Aquatic Center, was quoted in the Oct. 12 Sacramento Bee about the Aquatic Center and the programs it offers to the community.

Jeffrey Lustig, Government, was quoted in the Oct. 3 Los Angeles Times on those who opposed the initiatives on the special election ballot and the likelihood they will accomplish their goals.

Miguel Molina, Admissions, was quoted in the Sept. 9 editions of the Antelope Valley Press, the Napa Valley Register, the Vallejo Times Herald, and the Red Bluff News, about admitting students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Tim Hodson, Center for California Studies, was quoted in: the Sept. 11 Ventura County Star on Californians’ opinions on the Democratic legislature; a Sept. 17 Hayward Daily Review article on Gov. Schwarzenegger's decision to take on teachers and nurses in the special election; the Sept 17 Hayward Sunday Review, the Fremont Argus, and the Pleasanton Tri-Valley Herald on the prospects for Gov. Schwarzenegger’s re-election to a second term; the Sept. 17 Washington Post about Schwarzenegger's declaration to run for a second term; the Oct. 24 Sacramento Bee on Proposition 77 and its possible effects; the Oct. 23 San Francisco Chronicle on labor unions and the special election; and the Oct. 4 Stockton Record on the political party loyalty of Californians.

Barbara O’Connor, Communication Studies, was quoted in: the Oct. 5 Woodland Hills Daily News on Prop. 75; the Oct. 12 San Francisco Chronicle on the impact of Maria Shriver on the governor’s image and political success; the Nov. 13 Sacramento Bee on pre-election poll results indicating misconceptions about Propositions 76 and 77; the Nov. 10 USA Today about Gov.
