Lindy Valdez,
Kinesiology & Health Science, was selected to receive the 2007 California
Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (CAHPERD) Honor
Award. The notification letter states, “This award exemplifies the meritorious
contributions that you have made in the areas of service, research, teaching
and administration.” He will receive this award at the 2007 CAHPERD State
Conference on March 3.
Rafael Diaz, Mathematics/Statistics, co-authored an article
with Nirmal Mann, Gastroenterology, at UC Davis, titled “The Evaluation
of Classified Advertisements for Gastroenterology in NEJM 1985-2000,”
that appeared in the International Medical Journal, December 2006.
Volume 13, Number 4. The study involved a statistical Time Series analysis of
the number of classified advertisements in the New England Journal of Medicine
over a period of 20 years in order to explore a hypothesis relating the number
of these advertisements and a recent demand for colonoscopy screenings.
David Booher, Center for Collaborative Policy, was invited
to give a guest lecture at the Naval Post Graduate School College of Defense
Analysis in Monterey on Dec. 5, 2006. The lecture focused on the use of collaborative
strategies to address complex “wicked” problems.
Hellen Lee-Keller, English, has published an article titled
“Civilizing Violence: ‘The Haunted Valley,’” in The
Ambrose Bierce Project Journal, 2.1 (Fall 2006). The article addresses
Bierce’s radical politics that condemned the nineteenth-century United
States nation-building project.
Tom Knutson, Communication Studies, has been informed that
the Bangkok University Academic Review will publish his paper, "A
Scale to Measure Thai Rhetorical Sensitivity." The paper is co-authored
by Val Smith, Boondharika Kaweewong, and Phan Datthuyawat,
Communication Studies, and Rosechongporn Komolsevin, chair
of the doctoral program in Interpersonal Communication at Bangkok University,
Thailand. Knutson is spending the semester break in Thailand conducting research
and consulting at Bangkok University and Kasetsart University.
Barbara
O’Connor, Communication Studies, was appointed to the National
Policy Council on Information Communication Technology Literacy as a representative
of the CSU system. The goal of the council is to develop a national framework
for adoption of Information Communication Technology (ICT) thresholds. The Educational
Testing Service (ETS) has been beta testing ICT exams on CSU campuses for two
years. O’Connor chaired the International Framework Committee and served
on the ETS test development committee.
Bill Owen,
Communication Studies, has published a book of haiku, senryu and haibun entitled
haiku notebook.

Thrower Herron, Outreach Admissions Counselor, presented at the "First
Class Lady's Conference," St. Paul Baptist Church, on Nov. 18. The title
of her presentation was "Having a First Class Marriage."
