February marks the nation-wide celebration of Black History Month, and Sacramento State student organizations have planned more than 20 on-campus activities to honor African American culture, history and achievements.

This year’s theme, “Kujichagulia,” or “Self-Determination,” was created by a coalition of student organizations, including Africans for Reeducation, Innovation, Conciousness and Achievement (AFRICA). Sacramento State’s Multicultural Center and AFRICA will sponsor the opening reception for Black History Month 5 – 9 p.m. Friday, Feb.1 in the University Union’s Redwood Room. The opening reception will include refreshments and is open to the community.

An array of activities is scheduled for the month-long event and will include movies, lectures, performances and much more. A full calendar of events is available at www.csus.edu/mcult/. Sacramento State’s Multicultural Center and Student Activities assisted student organizations in coordinating events.

“There’s a full range of activities, all of which are educational, some interactive,” Student Activities Program Advisor Karlos Santos-Coy says. “It’s a great opportunity for students to connect and to learn about our diversity and our shared experiences.”

For more information on events, visit the multicultural center’s events page at www.csus.edu/mcult/ or call (916) 278-6101. For media assistance, contact Sacramento State Public Affairs office at (916) 278-6156.
