A musical "Re-view"

Cast members of Flops! |
Have
you ever loved a song but hated the musical? Sacramento State’s
Alumni Theatre Project will perform these diamonds in the
rough in Flops! Wonderful Songs from Not So Wonderful
Shows, a production that will bring back the best songs
from the worst stinkers in Broadway history. The musical opens
at 8 p.m., Feb. 10 at the University Theatre in Shasta Hall.
Performances will continue at 8 p.m. on Feb. 11, 17 and 18
and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 12 and 19.
The
show includes songs like “I’ll Be Seeing You”
by Irving Kahal and Sammy Fain from the musical Right
this Way and “Night and Day” by Cole Porter
from Gay Divorcee. Other artists include Irving Berlin,
Rodgers and Hammerstein, Learner and Loewe, Jerry Herman,
Stephen Sondheim and many others. More than the songs however,
the audience will also be enlightened by the backstage stories
that sped the demise of these washout productions despite
the involvement of some of Broadway’s greatest stars.
Flops!
was conceived and is directed by Ed Trafton, written by Georgia
Larson and the music was directed by Dan Pool.
The
musical is a fundraiser for the Robert Smart Memorial Lenaea
Scholarship. Bob Smart was a beloved and influential theater
professor during his 35 years of teaching at Sacramento State.
Smart directed more than 40 productions during his tenure
and spent a decade directing Sacramento State’s Lenaea
Festival, one of the largest high school festivals in the
nation. All proceeds go towards an annual $1,000 scholarship
awarded to applicants who are incoming freshmen theater majors.
Tickets
are $20 general, $18 for Alumni Association members, and $10
for students. Tickets are available at the Sacramento State
Ticket Office at (916) 278-4323 and at Tickets.com.
